In their defence, they could not see Alex had bent his head under. That sort of tackle is done hundreds of times in a weekend. Rugby League lost it's way when wrestling started to be coached. Chicken wings, judo holds on arms, wrestling, all tactics designed to slow down the play the ball, & give the defensive line time to reset. The NRL has to ensure coaches stop coaching those tactics, and referees must call held earlier, and penalise teams who continue with the tackle. Hysterical calls for massive penalties just shows a complete lack of understanding of the game, and are not helpful to any one. I think out of consideration for the young man given 7 weeks, for doing what he had been coached to do,[ and what happens every week, every game], people should keep those opinions to themselves. Direct your spite to the NRL and the coaches. They must change this aspect of rugby league. Bob
Very well said Bob fully agree major changes are needed. As it is the NRL is losing ground to the other codes in terms of how many kids are playing the game and the last thing the NRL needs is media hysteria. My old man played for the Valley's die-hards in the A grade comp in Brisbane in the mid 60s and tackles like that were often deliberate spear tackles. This is a tragic accident but steps can be taken to stamp it out and should be done ASAP before anymore parents are put off and don't let their kids play.

Totally agree (changes need to be made) - no matter how accidental it was, it happened. And it could happen again tomorrow - a 7 week ban will not deter any NRL player from doing the same tackle again.

In addition this type of injury is more likely to happen in this sport than most others that are played around Australia every weekend (with possible exception of AFL where such an accident could occur, but I'm not aware oif it ever being recorded as happening). So, the NRL has to take a good look at tackling and act responsibly.

Ofcourse our friendly lawyers will have an influence on all of this - nothing like a multi million dollar legal claim to influence change.

It has happened in the AFL and in local footy games before and only just 2 seasons ago my friend's son (ex VFL player) put his local sides playing coach in hospital with a bad neck injury and he never played again just by running into a pack and the coach ducked his head. Things happen sometimes and it is a risk in any sport.

Young Alex is making some very good progress in his recovery,a report from Danny Bederus saying that Alex has feeling and limited movement in his arms and on a even better note some tingling in his legs.

I am not a doctor but these sound like some very positive signs,it looks like this young fella might just walk his missus down the isle just like he promised her.

Good on ya bud keep fighting!!!!
