Europe is where everything good started and the reason we have an awesome country. You should get enthusiastic as it is the cultural centre of the earth and where all the best history is. I dont understand people that dont want to see the world. You will never truly appreciate where you're going unless you know where you've been.

I've been over a few times and loved it, I'm sure you will too. One thing I've never forgotten though is how lucky I am to have been able to. Regardless of how hard I worked for it, there is people who would love to be able to go on a decent holiday in this country let alone overseas.

    Food for thought anyway

Loved the anti-travel advice. Very funny!
Actually, we're a bit like that. We quickly move beyond the obvious tourist places and go looking for how the locals live. For example, we spent a month driving around the UK poking around local villages and meeting local people, which is the best way to see a country. In Asia we got away from the tourist traps and went where the locals go. Sometimes we went to places our local friends had never been, which was fun.
Hey Ron, why don't you check out house-swapping sites? Maybe you can go stay in a house over there and live like a local. Potter down to the shops, have lunch in a local pub etc.

Ron, I can sympathise with you, having spent most of my working life on the wrong side of the tourism trade I don't really want to go very far either.
But I read that your wife wants to show you where she was born, and this obviously means a bit to her.
Perhaps the diplomatic thing to do would be to satisfy her desires by accompanying her on a section of the journey, ask that she shows you her birthplace right at the start of the trip, then after her desire to share this obviously rather important (to her anyway) facet of the tour is completed you could honourably return home and enjoy yourself and she could carry on with the rest of her respite and enjoy herself.
The travellers amongst us will tell you about all the wonders of the world that you missed out on seeing with your own eyes (an act that apparently mystically magnifies the importance of the item itself), so you will return all the wiser for the wisdom that they will pass on, so really you don't have that much to lose.
It shouldn't take much more than 4 days to get there, catch up on some sleep, see the birthplace, sound interested, then arrange to come home. All done, all happy, all satisfied, and you should still remain good company and not too cranky after just those few days of compromise.
Problem solved. All you have to do is pay for it!
    Regards
    Glen

Jeez, talk about a "first world" problem!! Should I go on the lovely holiday with my wife and see some things I wouldn't normally see or should I stay at home so I can play with my hobby/potter about/surf the web???

    Ron,
End of the day, suck it up, harden up, go and enjoy some time with the missus. We put them through so much **** in our lifetime, they deserve some latitude. Anyhow that's all folks..

Compromise, she would of having put up with you all these years. Time to return the favor and stop acting childish. Worst case scenario you might actually have some fun.

Ron hasn't said he's not going, he's said he is just not that enthusiastic about the trip.
    Cheers,

    Sean
