I was offering my objective professional opinion, and not a subjective one. A "smack" in the head is a bit extreme and shows highly emotional thinking, which achieves nothing, except perhaps a criminal conviction for the person so doing.

Such thinking renders a person just as bad as the offender and is tantamount to the "Lynch mob" mentality that belongs in the past, with the same type of people who refer to gay folk as "poofters", retarded people as "spacks" and aboriginals as lazy and bludgers and "black" ********. It is redundant and offensive thinking. It is far worse for anyone in a youth leading or law enforcement role to have this point of view for the job they do.

You may be surprised at what my personal opinions are on this matter. I am not a yuppy but an experienced professional and the disorder is genuine and treatable if caught early. The parents are often not to blame. The person is often a victim of the culture in which they live.

Feel free to flame me if you wish, I find it interesting and will be taking notes on various points of view (from a psychological perspective). I now have a subject to write my thesis on
Why would I "flame" you. You're entitled to your opinion, even though I strongly disagree with it. A "smack" in the side of the head is exactly what my kids would have got had they demonstrated this type of behaviour and attitude - however I've never had reason to do this as I think our two kids have grown up as pretty well balanced young adults who show respect for others - so we must have got something right (without the need for all the psychobabble).

Your reference to other offensive namecalling which is totally unrelated to the topic of this thread says rather more about your own thought processes than those of anyone else who has responded to this thread. As it happens, I've never even heard of the term "spacks" - but your lumping people with whom you disagree in with people who use names and terms such as those you have listed indicates to me that you don't have a very strong basis for your own argument - so just lump all the "nasty" people (in your eyes) in together.

Maybe your opinion might be different if it was you or one of your family who had been knocked off a bike by this spoilt brat .................
    Cheers .........

I have been knocked off my bike and as the result I have a prosthetic limb!
But I don't carry it as a chip on my shoulder. I would be interested to know where you got you opinion of psychologists from?.................no actually I wouldn't and don't really give a stuff.

You used the label Yuppy, that is out dated and obsolete and a derogatory term. What does that say about your thought processes when you use words such as this.

If you don't agree with some then don't insult them.

If you don't like it well CHEWEY ON YA BOOTY!

If yuppy is an outdated and derogatory term and yuppies still exist everywhere , what the hell are they called then?

I use the terminology often and my thought processes are in perfect order....ie , unless I talk to a shrink....another derogatory and obselete term?

also, chewy on ya booty is also incorrect......it is 'chewy on ya boot'.....an old and still commonly used term to yell at afl players lining up a shot for goal.

booty is a yank expression.....although aaarrrgh believe pirates may use as a term for their treasure.

By a spoilt brat who "didn't care" that he or she had hit you - but was only interested in the damage you caused to his/her car ????
But I don't carry it as a chip on my shoulder. I would be interested to know where you got you opinion of psychologists from?..From a couple of workplace associated experiences that I'd much rather forget, and from seeing a couple of very troubled kids who didn't know whether they were coming or going after "professional counselling", one of those who eventually took his own life, and with confirmation of the views I've formed as recently as this morning ........... ...............no actually I wouldn't and don't really give a stuff. Glad to hear it - didn't think you would.

Yea, I got a few "clips under the ear" from Dad, a few "kicks up the bum" from the neighbours, I reckon I have turned out ok judging from the 2 Training awards I have received for training apprentices.

One problem I see today is that we as in society seem to be applauding all our young folk for anything and everything, as in some cases I have heard that there are no winners or losers, everyone gets a medal for participation so we don't make anyone feel inferior to anyone else, well that's all well and good and I don't profess to be an expert but someone once said "In order to humble one needs to feel humiliation" I think some people, not all, but some need a little humiliation to be able to differentiate themselves from what is expected and what the do............Just my thoughts

I have been watching this Thread with great interest, particularly the comments about bad parenting. I have had experience as a parent having raised five children. All have turned out fine and are responsible adults except for one.

He is grown up now (40 years of age) but back in the 1970's and 80's he gave his mother and myself a hell of a time. He was easily led fell in with crooked mates and finished up on drugs, thieving, assault, you name it. Spent many a year in jail as a result of all this. We absolutely refused to visit him in jail and told him so.

We tried everything, counselling, talking to him, banning his mates from visiting, but all to no avail. I won't bore fellow readers with all the details, but we tried to set good examples and discipline which worked for the other four but not him.

He has settled down now, more mature in outlook, met a loverly lady, holding down a steady job (impossible a few years ago) and trying to make up for the "lost" years.

So please don't blame parenting if you don't know the details. S11mad, I wish I knew you back in the 1970's counselling in those days was not as good as now.

I might add here that "kicks up the bum" and "clips over the ear" did not work with my son. Besides in his latter teenage years he was bigger than me.

    Hi SIImad,

Just interested, are you a Psychologist, or studying Postgrad?

I have just started Provisional Psych Registration (or internship) in rural health.
