    Actualy, if you get her a drive of an S2 TD5 auto that's been chipped, the cruiser will drive like a tractor. Come to think of it, they do anyway.
    Lots of cruisers around here with for sale signs on them.

    Hi Redback, what you buy is up to you, but as Kev pointed out purchasing a Land Cruiser over a Disco Series II is a miss informed decision. I was talking to a guy down at the Land Rover dealer in Bathurst and he has a XW GTHO Falcon which he tows to car shows on a regular basis, he tows the trailer and car with ease and fuel consumption never goes above 12ltr/100km. The best fuel consumption figures for the cruiser (diesel) without towing are 12.5. Also if i am not mistaken the towing capacity of the Disco is higher than the cruiser. The disco was always 4000kg, where as the Cruiser was around the 2700km-3500km mark, not sure where in the range it is, the cruisers used to be alot less than the Series I Disco, i doubt it will have dropped. Then with fuel prices creeping up, the Disco again wins out, the TD5 Disco is far more frugal than the Cruiser. AS Damo said you also have to factor in Driveability, the cruiser is like driving a truck, the disco is a far smaller vehicle and much easier to manuver around.

    In the end you and the family will buy the vehicle which best suits youre needs, and although my opinion is about as biased as an edition of 4wd Monthly, i feel the Disco is a better option. Dont buy the cruiser based on towing alone, the only benefit the Cruiser has over the Disco is internal space, its bigger, thats the only advantage. Oh, and the Disco's are cheaper to buy. Just make sure you test drive both the Disco and the Cruiser, and give Kerry a good drive of each. Matt

    Hows the baby & Mrs.
    I would love to drive a discovery but some silly bugger decided to take his RR for a swim and I did not get a chance. I would also like to tow our trailer. I find it hard to belive that a 2.5 lt motor will give you the same grunt as a 4.2
    Also the parts for the discovery are dearer than the cruiser.
    Yes I have driven a 80 series Landcruiser on more than one occassion and not just to the shop and back so I do know what its like.
    I'm not totally convinced not to buy a Discovery but I am having my doubts. I still need to see one in action crossing a river, towing the trailer and cruising along the highway

    Here's a good one to try.
    The list prices for toyo parts.
    D3 on the way, D2's and parts will become cheaper, actually they are becoming cheaper. Toyota has never given Australia current technology, they wait until people start to get ****ed off before they bring it out.
    And we have always payed a higer price for the same technology with a toyot badge on it.
    Driver assist technology is one great example of the toyo rip-off.
    Developed by Merc Benz in the 80's as a safety feature to help keep a car on the road, rover developed it into hill descent control, then into traction control. BMW bought LR to get it's hands on the proprietry technology in 97, now Ford is putting it into vehicles as they own LR and the technology.
    Toyota is bringing the same stuff out and saying it's a revolutionary new technology that makes them unbeatable. It's only new to the sheep and they pay a huge premium to have it. Constant 4wd in toyotas was the big thing in the mid-late 90's what a technological revolution! But wait, hasn't landrover and jeep had that since 1970 for LR and mid 70's for Jeep (quadratrac)? Toyotas independent front suspension, that's a big perfromance and safety feature right? Nope, it is a feature of cheaper, unitary construction and again they charge more when they are producing for less. A mid range cruiser is about $70G new, yet it is manufactured on the same production line as the lexus 470 and the whole line employs 150 people. They want 110 large for a lexus 470!
    And now, with the poor economic conditions in Japan, we are starting to see the effect on their products, mitsubishi ( always been crap products, you hardly see a used dealer with magna's in the yard! ) is on the ropes, toyo has had a huge publice recall and many many quiet ones ( remeber the prado engine fire fault? Just a $1.50 valve on the fuel rail!). The goal posts are moving and its europe ovetaking japan.

    For me, I get the sh*ts with my rangie now and then, but it has character and soul, and I don't look like the sheep in their catalog customised dream of adventure. I also go a lot further in the same comfort for a fraction of the price.

    I am not afraid to take risks or be different.

    I have life and character.

    I drive a Landrover.

    Hi Kerry, it' Sean. Sorry to hear about the mishap with the explorer.
    Ace got it wrong on the towing figures for the disco, they were 4000kgs before they had ABS, the ABS models are 3500kgs, I think you'd find the 100 series will tow the same.
    The disco is much more economical, the guy in the house next to ours down the coast has been towing a 20 odd foot caravan down from up near the QLD border for a number of years with his and swears by it. He worked for a council up that way somewhere and had the oportunity to tow the van with a good variety of vehicles.
    Also, the disco is the most capable off road in its class on the market.

    To answer youre 1st question the family is fine, Marcos is a bit restless, but he is working into the routine and sleeping more regular blocks at night.

    When it comes to engines redback, refinement will give you grunt over engine size anytime, unless its enormous, just look at the ford Boss 260 and the Holden GENIII V8, in order to keep up with fords highly refined and far more technologically advanced 5.4L V8, holden is just brining in the 6L GENIV, not the solution.

    Land Cruisers have always gone for size over refinemnent, and this is why Nissan and Toyota need to develop a new motor fast, the current engines, which have been in Nissans and Toyos for ages are poorly refined gas guzzlers, thats it. They will not conform to polution regs for much longer. When the Disco was 1st released in 89 the TDi was hailed as the best turbo diesel of its time, Land Rover were one of the 1st 4wd manufacturers, if not the 1st, to use an intercooler. Dont assume a big engine is better, its just thirstier. Remember the transmission also plays a huge role in towing. When it comes to sex size may be everything (according to woman anyway), but when it comes to engines it how you use it, not how big it is. I was once talking to a guy with a series I disco, i asked him what he thought of it, he said he didnt really like Land Rovers, but the Disco was the only vehicle which would tow his horse float easily. Dont let size fool you redback. The Land Cruiser engine gets similar power figures to the Disco and its 1.7L bigger in capacity, that says alot for the design and ability of the TD5. Matt

    I forgot to mention too Kerry, A diesel motor will run under water. As long as you keep the intake up high, if you're worried about it, get a snorkel. Raising the breather tubes from you diffs is always a good idea too.
