I saw a large black cat in the middle of the Simpson in 1965. Also actually caught a rabbit. A few years ago a study on feral cat genetics strongly suggested that NT feral cats did not originate from European populations, but from Asian populations, and had drifted enough to support the theory that they were introduced long before European exploration of Australian coastlines. SE Australian feral cats, however, have genetics very close to the domestic variants. This does not necessarily mean there were none in the wild before European settlement - an influx of cats along with the settlers could well have swamped any existing strains.

I find it interesting, in prehistoric times, Australia had a native sabre tooth cat.
Hmmm...., cats. Emotive topic. I wonder what people would think if I dispatched their beloved Rover when he wandered onto my property?
Don't bother telling me dogs don't escape and wander. They do. I had the next door neighbours dogs jump a 7' fence into my back yard and kill the other next door neighbours cat there. I wouldn't have believed it but I saw it with my own eyes and with witnesses.
Good job a small child hadn't been around.
Those dogs have since been dispatched.
Yes, feral cats and dogs should be put down. I've caught a few and had them put down.
But, domestic cats do a very important job around the home. My cat is often collecting mice and rats for me. I have friends who use cats to keep their home and garden snake free. The cat generally doesn't survive but neither does the snake
When I was a kid we had a small tabby cat who specialised in catching and killing snakes. She was about ten before she disappeared - probably got a bit slow in her old age! Snakes were a real problem - my twin brother survived snake bite when he was about five.

Talking about snakes I wonder if a cat have a remote chance against a carpet snake.
I'm working up some loads for my 30-06 for rabbits...
If the 22Mag is no good (too loud or powerful) just get a break-barrel air rifle and use that !
