Thread: Does anyone ever obey the speed limit

Coming back down the Bruce to Brisbane the other day there was a woman in a Hyundai doing 80 in the 110 zone, blocking the inside or fast lane, causing a big queue of traffic behind her and people going to the outside lane to try to get around her. After being repeatedly flashed she finally moved over to the left lane, but continued doing 80. I reckon every single driver who I saw go past her gave her a death stare or worse. Seriously, if I was a traffic cop I would book her for dangerous driving.

Other than being an absolute pain was she actually breaking any road rule ( other than driving slow in the rh lane). There is no minimum speed set.

Yes. In right lane at that speed limit you must only be in that lane if overtaking

Its known as impeding the flow of traffic and it IS an offence under the road Traffic Act.. (My mate and I have been booked under it at speeds of 115km/h+)

Driving slowly
According to the NSW (And SA I believe to.. Digger would likely know??) Road Rules you cannot drive so abnormally slowly that you cause an obstruction. An example of driving ?abnormally slowly? would be, if you were travelling at a speed of 20 kilometres per hour on a road with a speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour, then you could be causing an obstruction to other drivers if there is no reason for you to drive at that speed on that road.

Whilst there is no minimum speed rule, she can be booked for impeding traffic.

A really powerful set of driving lights makes light work of right lane hogs, and a bull bar to make sure they don't step on the brake...

In built up areas I try on the open road I drive to the conditions. I feel the worst speed to travel any long distance at is 100Ks for any length of time It rocks you to sleep.

I was planning to blast her with the Lightforces but other drivers got to her first.
I have heard of people being booked for blocking the fast lane. I believe there is a rule you're supposed to keep left unless overtaking on any multi-lane road even if it's not signposted. This is an example of the good driving habits I would like to see given more attention by the road safety authorities. Fining people for failing to keep left and for blocking faster traffic might do more to improve road safety than harassing people for minor speed breaches, I think.

In SA on a multi laned road that has a posted speed limit ABOVE 80kph, or if the road has signs saying "keep left unless overtaking"(on any posted speed limit)....it is an offence to travel in the right hand lane unless overtaking, or caught up in heavy slow moving traffic.


Unfortunately, it would appear that a huge amount of drivers in SA either don't know the above rule, or just don't care.


When the southern expressway was infamously 'one way', it was really bad for the above, as there were exits from the right hand lane, and people would get into the right hand lane about 2km prior in anticipation, and would also slow down accordingly, not that you need to, to properly use and entry or exit ramp!
