Helmets save lives. My brother is proof.
He was 16 and riding across a concrete causeway and fell off his mountain bike at full speed from the weed in the creek , his impact was top of his skull into the bank of the creek. The foam padding in the helmet was 10% of the thickness in the impact zone compared to the rest. The doctors said without it he would have been dead, as it was he still crushed 3 vertebrae and spent 8 weeks in hospital as well as having about 20 stitches / big scar/ gash and a pin in his hand. He is still not allowed to lift anything to heavy.
So helmets do work, at kid speeds. Whereas at 100kph plus their really for id purposes.:D
I too got knocked of my bike at 50+kmh on my way home from work b4 helmets were law here in SA. I was wearing a helmet. Long story short it saved my life as i was pushed into a video store driveway that had a very large rock garden out front and i hit the biggest rock. Destroyed my bike. Smashed my left shoulder, knee and hip on the rock. The helmet shattered on impact with the rock but took all the force of the impact and protected my head. Helmets are good. Cant ride a pushy any more. No knee cap. Cant push the pedal down. Still have trouble with stairs and ramps. But im still here thanks to the helmet.
Cheers Rod
Worst thing is the driver of the red ford that hit me just kept on going. Thank goodness for work cover travelling to and from work clause.

NSW lost cover to and from work a few years ago:(
Some unions and some insurers will cover it.
I don't know what the Law is in SA but when I was brought down on my Motor Bike and broke my thumb , which needed surgery. The driver of the car took off. I was told by the local Traffic Sargent that I could sue the Nominal Defendant.
This is like the Clayton's Defendant or the Defendant you have when you don't have a Defendant. Of course this was thirty years ago when the GIO was the only Third Party insurer. The interests of Corporations was not a factor and the Victim was not run through the hoops they are today. I was well compensated.
This is how tojo drivers deal with them.
Knife-wielding Western Australian driver turns on cyclist in road rage incident - 9news.com.au

Had the cyclist not asserted his presence on the road, I doubt the road rage incident would have occurred.Quote:
the cyclist had been forced to assert his presence on the road
Ok, the driver got a hefty fine. But, has the cyclist considered what might have happened had things gone even more wrong? I wonder how his kids would cope without a dad?
You'll also notice the cyclist was not keeping to the left as is required by law!
two wrongs don't make a right.
