I average around 10,000km a year on my bicycle and have done for the last 6 years so I feel qualified to make a statement regarding whether I need a mirror or not when I ride my bike. Maybe for those lacking in confidence and awareness of what is going on around them a mirror would be a useful tool.
Personally I have these things on the side of my head called ears that can tell me a lot about what is going on around me when I ride. As a serious cyclist I am pretty well tuned into what is going on around me when I'm out there on my bike. Sure I'm not going to see the idiot using their mobile phone coming up behind me but once you start thinking like that its time to find another sport.
Don't presume your lack of ability translates to being my lack of ability.

looking back is avoided by using a mirror, probably why other road vehicles are required to have them. Looking back or 'a head check' is only required before you lane change...
assuming all 'is well' behind you just adds to the 'ignorance' mentioned here and is simply irresponsible.

and I'm over analysing it
as long as you have a bell and warn others of your high speed approach, that's a start, good on you
