And this is why a cyclist needs some form of I.D. on public display, to be held accountable just like all other road users. Sometimes I think it's their anonymity that makes them behave as they do...
Re: the other comments in relation to my prior posts, I'm not wasting my breath or time replying to someone that won't take responsibility for their own actions or wellbeing. That's moronic. Please don't ride near me.
I've stayed away from this thread because I didn't want to be "sucked in",...and I will not be, but as an occasional cyclist myself, & as wifey is a continual one, I have a few things to add.
We live in Beachside Melbourne, we are close to Beach Road. And I can tell you that we see far more offending cyclists than we do cars.
We see cyclists out of their bike lane impeding traffic, just going on their merry way, holding up the traffic, right out of the bike lane two abreast, holding up traffic,.....regularly. We see cyclists going through red lights,.....regularly, we see cyclists not keeping to their bike lane ,.....regularly.
I ain't saying motorists are "golden haired",....of course there are some that aren't, but we see MANY MANY more offending cyclists, who are risking their own lives by their riding habits. Don't tell me that motorists should look out for them,....I won't be, but I will certainly, as always be driving safely, and if all cylclists have the same respect for ALL road users as Wifey & I do, there would be no issues.
I say that cyclists have as much right to be on the road as motorists, but consequently should be subject to the same rules, and should therefore be able to be identified, the same as a motorist, by a registration plate.
Of course, I now am ready to be flamed. But before you do that, just drive up & down Beach Rd on a Sunday Morning.

Thankyou, Pickles, for your words of experience.
Yes. Beach Road is well known amongst many Melbourne residents. Do they still run that ride of death or whatever they called it?
Oh, Google an article in The Age in March 2015.
Beach Road cyclist left with fractured skull in wake of "Hell Ride"
Very interesting article. It goes to show the sort of cyclists we have to deal with here.
They do mate, they do, seen it many times.
But, the "Hell Riders" are NOT the main offenders.
