Same goes for motorists. A resource stopped me and checked my license this afternoon.
Likewise, I have a HV endorsement on my license which is in my pocket as I drive. Yep, it doesn't identify me unless I am stopped and asked to produce my license. What are you saying? We should do away with licenses and anyone can drive/ride any vehicle they want?
You should see the size of the numbers and letters on my bike rack plate. They're small and yet identifiable.
Speaking for myself. My attitude will not change as I will continue to treat them with the utmost respect as a fellow road user.
What will make these cyclists respect the road rules and other road users?
Accountability.
Should a cyclist accrue enough points to have their car license canceled, they can still ride their bike. Should it mean they lose the privilege to cycle, that may make them think a little before they ride through that red light. It might even save their life.
I sense your sarcasm.
Yes. If cyclists don't need licenses then anyone should be able to drive a triple road train through Sydney CBD without any formal training or knowledge of road rules.
The vehicles don't need to be registered or have any form of insurance.
Or so some will lead us to believe.
My point being that you don't need a license for the police to stop you on a bike. The police can stop you for breaking the law regardless of whether you are a pedestrian, cyclist or motorist. Having a license doesn't change that.
The real issue I see with the argument that posters are making regarding licenses is that police are not enforcing the law. Cyclists don't need a license for the police to enforce the road laws and it goes against your driver's license if you get pinged on your bike anyway which for most cyclists would be a greater penalty than against a cycle license.
In my view the argument about registering cyclists is just a smokescreen. Personally, in Perth I would be happy to see a police presence on the bike paths enforcing the law on some of the lunatics out there. If they want to setup at some of the intersections in Perth good on them but they'll be so busy writing tickets for all the jaywalkers they won't have time to bother about the odd cyclist.![]()
Thanks Mick for pointing out my little sarcasm / not well brought up point ( I am not the best in discussion meets what I am trying to relay). We all need to be very wary of everyone and everything on the road. I left out the bigger vehicles for a point as not many have even looked at the issue of that or the size comparison between vehicles. They have a lot to deal with and it comes down to size and also maneuverability they are really in a bad position with respects to other road users. They have to deal with anything of a lesser size with them and yet many don't give them the respect they need on the road to control their vehicle while trying to avoid accidents or give them the room to move. Cyclists or even motor bike riders, as they are small and "can" be nimble are also not protected as the car is the like "bike" compared to a larger vehicle like a truck or bigger.
Just like a truck or a car, regardless of size be very wary of whats on the road and respect other people out there. Some people are very good drivers/riders some are very bad drivers/ridersJust wish everyone can be safe and give everyone respect to their abilities.
