Yesterday I had one of those experiences that makes you stop and think.
We have all seen the tragic accidents where people seem too regularly back over kids etc.... but I'd always generally put them down to lack of attention or just plain crap driving.
I realised yesterday how wrong I was.
I jumped in the car, which was parked outside a set of shops:
Started it
Checked all 3 mirrors
Threw it into reverse thinking " nothing there"....
Then the reversing buzzer starts screaming .. "what the?"
In my D4, if you go into reverse too soon after starting it takes a few seconds for the reversing camera to come on.... I think some of the computers are still doing stuff.
Anyway..
I waited for the reverse camera - and right on the left hand edge of the screen I can see something green.
I double check the mirrors... still cant see anything there - what the hell is it.

So I put it in park and jumped out to take a look.
There standing 6 inches from my left tail lights is a little old lady
my guess is 75 +
She was short enough that her shoulders where below the level of my back window and her head was obscured by the rear pillar.
She was totally oblivious to me starting the car or what a dangerous situation she was in.
She was apparently " waiting for her daughter"
After helping guide her off the road - she told me I had a lovely car
So I wished her a merry Christmas and drove away thinking that despite doing all the right things.... if it wasn't for that buzzer and camera... I could have very easily had a very memorable Christmas for all the wrong reasons
Makes you think.....
