    Saved by the Buzzer

Yesterday I had one of those experiences that makes you stop and think.

We have all seen the tragic accidents where people seem too regularly back over kids etc.... but I'd always generally put them down to lack of attention or just plain crap driving.

I realised yesterday how wrong I was.

I jumped in the car, which was parked outside a set of shops:
    Started it
    Checked all 3 mirrors
Threw it into reverse thinking " nothing there"....
Then the reversing buzzer starts screaming .. "what the?"

In my D4, if you go into reverse too soon after starting it takes a few seconds for the reversing camera to come on.... I think some of the computers are still doing stuff.

    Anyway..
I waited for the reverse camera - and right on the left hand edge of the screen I can see something green.
I double check the mirrors... still cant see anything there - what the hell is it.
So I put it in park and jumped out to take a look.

There standing 6 inches from my left tail lights is a little old lady my guess is 75 +

She was short enough that her shoulders where below the level of my back window and her head was obscured by the rear pillar.

She was totally oblivious to me starting the car or what a dangerous situation she was in.

She was apparently " waiting for her daughter"

After helping guide her off the road - she told me I had a lovely car

So I wished her a merry Christmas and drove away thinking that despite doing all the right things.... if it wasn't for that buzzer and camera... I could have very easily had a very memorable Christmas for all the wrong reasons

    Makes you think.....

Ooh scary. I've had similar where I was parallel parked and reversing a little to get out of the car park, but didn't realise and couldn't see Ol' mate standing in the same spot waiting to cross the road. He became visible when he moved to cross the road.

All too easy to do unfortunately, but it amazes me how few pedestrians seem to think about potential hazards when walking near cars. Seems like common sense to me, you are walking near something that can kill you. Wouldn't you want to take notice of what its doing?

    To my astonishment Jon,

This old dear wasn't even crossing the road.... she was standing stationary almost leaning on my car waiting for her daughter, standing on the road !

So glad I double and triple checked

I had a scary moment a few years ago, when I was leaving to go to football training in the middle of winter (so it was dark). Just to give you some background I live on acreage and we have 2 houses on the property which we live in the rear one. As the driveway is 120m long we drive in, and when we go to leave we reverse down about 20 down to a y junction in the driveway which leads to the front house.

Anyways on the night in question my eldest daughter had got out of the house and no one noticed (see is special needs and loves trying to get into cars for a ride). When she couldn't get into our cars she headed off down the driveway towards the road. I then came out hopped into the car and reversed down into the other driveway watching behind me, when I went to go forward much to my shock there was my daughter right in the headlights getting exited about going for a drive in the car.

It still to this day scares me about what could have happened if she had decided to walk back up whilst I was reversing.

What about the clowns that step out and walk onto a pedestrian crossing with out even looking. The other day i saw a young lady do it pushing a pram and with another toddler behind her,not even holding onto her.

She didn't even look to see if anything was coming along the road.

I am pretty sure when i was a kid i was taught to look left then right, then right again before leaving the footpath.

Being a bus driver, I see a lot of stupid things happening on the road. One dangerous habit a lot of people have is if they leave the bus via the front doors and want to cross the road, they walk in front of the bus.

The bus driver has his/her attention mainly focused on making sure everybody has safely alighted from the bus, checking to make sure the doors (particularly the rear door) are closed, checking rear vision mirror on left side to make sure nobody (particularly children) are standing too close to the bus, checking the centre mirror to make sure passengers are safely seated.

Then checking the right side mirror for oncoming traffic, the driver then looks ahead as he/she prepares to move off and there is some clown standing right in front of the bus trying to look around the bus for oncoming traffic, so they can cross the road. Why they can't wait a few moments until the bus moves off has me scratching my head.

DANGEROUSand foolish to say the least.

True there are a number of scary situations brought on by errent pedestrians , but I was taught that I should walk around the vehicle to see what might be hidden , before starting and reversing. Not a hard routine to learn. Besides what do you do when driving a vehicle without a sensor or camera ?

The trouble with pedestrians though, is they have this habit of moving.

I can't see through the back of my canopy at all, and though I am always careful, your experience suggests I get a rear camera now.
    Thanks for the warning Bytemrk.
