I'll hazzard a guess here. For the majority, it won't be about $11. It won't be about the principal. It won't be about views on the value of information or help garnered. Of the 18k members, for 70, 80, 90%, the'll fade out or go somewhere else. They'll have the answer to a question that's been asked in a thread, go to reply and find that they can't. They'll search for a thread that they read earlier and find that they can't. Some will then subscribe. Most won't.

So what you've achieved is not cutting off 70% of the ingrate. You cut off 70% of your user base. Of your experience. Of your 'barter system'. A quiet forum is a dead forum, no matter how good the intentions are.

As an aside, I wonder what the renewal rate of the vendors will be in 12 months when the user base is 20-30% of what it once was.

Commercially, there may have been better alternatives. A sticky at the top of each sub-forum highlighting the benefits of subscribing. To be honest, when I joined, I went straight to the D3-D4 section and I've never left there. This is my first post outside of that section and had honestly forgotten about subscription till the site appeared broken and I got the moderator message at the top of the screen this morning.

A donation drive done quarterly with a donated prize (eg traxide or something similar) would earn plenty and keep the need to support a local forum in front of people's minds. There are plenty of ways.

Munting peoples access is never the answer. None of the above is said in malice and it's not intended as a whinge. I'll go subscribe now, but my fear is that we'll lose more than we gained by cutting off the 'freeloaders'.

disco4.co.uk and their supporting vendors will probably thank you though...

    Cheers,

A fair point that might be a little off center unless I've misunderstood how the system is ment to work now

You get three months worth of the base user level access for free to try it all out and then you need to subscribe.

I'd hazard the guess that the numbers of. people who breezE in looking for an answer to a specific question and then stay on will balance out against those who'll the. Up just to answer a question..

I've generally not had issues searching for info on the site , the biggest problem I face is when I forget what system.I'm on, double click the search button and get the "you have to wait 20 seconds message instead of my search result. I almost preferred it when it was a minute, twenty seconds is just enough to be frustrating but not long enough to make it worth going to get another cup of coffee...,

Of course, I'm forced to wonder if that's a problem for some people, with the truely outrageous cost of subscription who could afford a coffee anyway.......

And yes, that last line should be read as though it was in that sarcasm.font I so desperately need.

As for this thread I have been a subscriber for a few years if it helps keep the place going then no problems I spend a lot more keeping 3 landies on the road so paying a small fee here for all the cheap help and advice is good value
I enjoyed the last night drive you did Geoff...I still owe you 10 bucks from it as well. It looks like I'm in the hole for at least $21 because of this site.

I bought my disco in 2004, I had a family on a single wage and wasn't flushed for cash but the technical knowledge and the assistance from the members on here saved me the cash to allow me to own a landrover and to be able to use it because I learned to service and fix it myself. Now I can return the favour and pass on my knowledge. If that is worth less than $11 a year then there's something terribly wrong with you.

I haven't been as active in recent years as I used to be but even if I needed to pop in and ask the odd tech question its still worth $11 a year because it saves me the time and expensive of getting it to a mechanic.

I joined when there were less than 1000 members and whilst it's not the close personal forum it used to be it's still a great place to browse through.

Thanks Inc for what you are doing. I am limited in what work I can do to my vehicle. I can't even service it due to medical problems. However from time time to time I can offer advice...for what it is worth. Being a paid up member gives me reams of reading when I struggle to get out of this chair and I wouldn't miss this forum for quids. p.s. The medicos have finaly found out my problem.. my pituitary gland is not working fully so I have been put on iron infusions and hormone replacement. Boy I have really fired up so more hands on in the future. Jim

I do sometimes wonder how much time some people spend reading threads that they don't think belong here.
    Incisive observation...

OK, I've put an exclusion in for this domain on my 2 ad blockers... Will try and help out that way too... Basically the forum has to pay for itself. I and many others hate ads so have a general ad blocker 'net wide, I personally had forgotten that ads existed as I haven't seen them for about 15 years online lol
