Do you use low range, CD unlocked?

Just wondering. I use it a fair bit with trailer reversing, other low-speed stuff. Saves wear on the clutch.

Off road most tracks I drive are comfortable in low (max 40 kph in L5). It is easy to choose the right ratio to suit the conditions. Locking the CD is easier and can be done "on the move" without much thought. Besides I'm not usually in a hurry, the windows are down and it is easier on the vehicle.

On road sometimes used in crawling traffic and manoeuvring a laden trailer.

I said never but I meant very very rarely. The kind of infrequent holiday offroad driving I do (creek crossings, a muddy patch and bit of beach etc) I would probably lock the diff in a situation where I was contemplating the need for LR. That is what I was advised on a 4WD course (when talking about slippery/loose stuff). If I ever towed something as you say I think I might.

I was in a convoy with a farmer who never bothered with CDL but did use LR from time to time at the places I described above. A couple of times I stuck with what the teacher said and locked my diff for a "difficult" bit. Had a bit of trouble unlocking again sometimes - needed to back up etc. I could not see him in his vehicle but I'd put money on him saying nowt to his missus looking in the mirror and arching his eyebrow just a bit as he waited for me to sort myself out. None of us got stuck so I guess it was good result all round.

My 02 Discovery II doesn't even have a centre Diff Lock, relies totally on the Traction Control system through the ABS brakes. Works really well. I would like the Traction control to cut in a little earlier some times though.

I know there is a mod available to allow you to lock the centre diff, but never needed it.

    Answered "rarely"

Much the same as others, generally only used low with CD unlocked when reversing trailers etc.

Often. As OI said, there's a lot of tracks where it's more comfortable to cruise along in low, only locking the centre diff when the going gets a bit slippery. I have a manual and there's less need for gear changes when in low, my thoughts are that I'd use low less if I were driving an auto.
