Some of our equipment is old, but works well enough to make us in the cheapest 1/3 if you remove all other countries Govt.support;). The oldest parts where built to last, are still as fast as new technology wish many of us using long term skills to speed up throughput and will probably be used for another 40 years, the places that benefit from technology have adapted various items to suit the plant.
Other parts are near new, or updated regularly which means we almost match Japan for.coal usage per ton or steel produced, China uses around 20% more than either Japan or us.
We also have the advantage of 1/2 our needs in our backyard, AAA grade coking coal from local mines. Whereas Japan and China need to import a majority of both their coal and ore.

We finally got state payroll tax cut:D
Today local business, union reps and bsl management where allowed a limit of 1 hr to meet with industry minister Payne. We all hope this will lead to further discussion and development of a buy local/ oz produced economic benefit on purchase policy and is not just a token effort.

Let's hope the can restrict dumping

Yeah maybe a 25% local supply requirement for government funded projects, because steel is an industry of national importance.

This is an EXCELLENT result for ALL Australians. Concessions made by ALL parties involved, Govt, Bluescope and the Unions.
Most will now, as I understand it, keep their jobs.
This is the sort of thing that needs to happen all over Aussie, if We are ever to make any headway.

Yep, less political ideology and more pragmatic realism is what this country urgently needs to revive our stagnant economy, I think. After all, we just handed out $46m plus various tax concessions to get two Hollywood movies made here (about twice what the federal government refused to keep SPC Ardmona open), so surely saving our steel industry is more important than making movies.

The unions are aiming for 100%, but bsl is being more PC and talking the local benefit policy which would say Chinese coil at $500/ton or aussie coil at $525, the Aussie coil should get purchased because a vast majority of the $$$$$ stay here and help boost local economies and income whereas the Chinese coil $$$$ just disappear overseas.
Also if we imported all our steel and let bsl and arrium shut it would be well over 4 billion loss to our balance of trade.

More importantly if the Government bought 100% local, it would support local jobs and keep the local workers off the dole. Otherwise its a fivefold loss to Oz, loss in GDP, loss in balance of trade, loss in the worker's income tax, a loss (reduction) in the worker's disposable income (supporting local businesses) and a burden on other taxpayers paying unemployment benefits.
