So who's to blame when a driverless car has an accident?
Uber self-driving car accident: Who's to blame when there's no driver? - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
There’s no such thing as an autonomous car and there never will be unless humans become subservient to machines. We are heading that way, but I think there will be so many disasters whenever human control is relinquished, that autonomy will be outlawed. The idea that technology can replace human judgement is fanciful, just like the paperless office and the 8 hour work day. The more technology the more we humans will need to do to maintain it. The less relaxed we’ll be. New technologies account for much of the increased incidence of depression and burnout. The sooner we realise that autonomous machines will make human life harder not easier the better. I’m not holding my breath! But I doubt I’ll ever want an autonomous car.
No, won’t happen. Even with the odd disaster it will still save 1000’s if lives overall so it is inevitable. We are already happy with autonomous trains in many parts of the world so it will come, it’s only a matter of time. Sooner you get used to it, the better off you’ll be.
Our work already has a draft policy saying that they will go to autonomous vehicles when they can as it will be safer than us driving them around ourselves.
Can’t wait.![]()

The elephant in that room you constructed is, of course, that autonomous trains run on rails that are not in any way normally seen as shared spaces with motorvehicles, motorcycles, cyclists, or pedestrians.
Put autonomous cars on freeways or Tways that are limited to only motorvehicles - sure. Bring it on.
