I am in East fremantle and not even listed yet on the rollout. Have to say I was just in NZ past week and it is disappointing to see how far we lag behind our kiwi friend. And before anyone says how small their country is I have to challenge have they had our boom times.

We sold our old house that had fibre to the home, and connected up the road at our rental while we build. The rental also has fibre to the home which is brilliant with my 3 oldest kids, wife and myself all using the net with virtually no lag, unlike adsl which would freeze up if 2 where using a heavy site. Now my game can update a map change at 5-10 Mbps while my daughter is on Skype/watching YouTube, my oldest son on mine craft, younger son same and my wife bouncing around net.
My worry is the new house we're building has nbn in the estate, but if it's only to the node it may not handle our future needs, with 7 in the house the downloads are only going up.

I wonder how hard to privately extend from node to house?

Depends how far away the node is. Even to run the fibre from the street to our hose was a big job. 2 man crew. They said they had a target of 2 houses per day per crew, but often didn't meet that as the conduit is so degraded.

I did see costs around $5k discussed somewhere.

Our fixed wi-fi NBN works well and so much better than satellite, with the tower only 6 kms away line of sight, but only from the top of the roof as it skims 1 metre above the crest of higher ground on one of my paddocks 1km from the house. Many closer people can't get the signal though due to hills.
