I suspect the poms, or some at least, were asleep during this period of dawning enlightenment.
I think that you will also find that the use of leather and rope seals and also the common use of reverse Archimedes screw "oil seals" were the main reasons for the predisposition for oil leaks. The Germans, Yanks and Japs went to rubber and neoprene seals while the Brits kept to the tired and true methods of recycling the oil back into the ground.

or was it just that technology advanced and was picked up by the japs before we and others considered the new fangled stuff and had to change our production methods and tooling?
and don't just blame land rover, holden, ford and many others, were caught with their pants down by the japs.
its only that the japs were so hated after ww2 that our improvements/catchups, were slow.
we also didn't like the jerrys, same problem, ww2, but they were making excellent stuff during the war and when it ended, the yanks took all the smart jerrys and improved their production quality.

They also took the "Jerry Can" design with them also. A marvelous invention of the Germans. The folds prevented the can bursting and leaking.

Except the Brits were still using leather seals into the 1970s while virtually everyone else were using seals that actually worked. But yes the Japanese did get quality control down well before the Yanks and Europe.

Ive always told people that Landy oil leaks were a design feature.I tell a tale about the salt they chuck on the road in UK to melt ice and the corrosion it causes to vehicles.I go on to say Land Rover created a metered oil loss system to protect the chassis against the salt.SUCKED MANY IN
Saw an imported D1 TDi where the oil protection system failed, beautiful looking vehicle.Knowing it was an import,I lifted the rear carpetThere was no floor left!!!!!!

    Empty.

My hybrid had a real bad oil leak. The co workers noticed.
"You have a bad oil leak." they said.
"No it's not." says I. "It's a chassis corrosion inhibiting system. It keeps the chassis covered with a thin film of oil to stop it rusting. Does you 4wd have that feature?"
They wandered off with comments like "What a good idea.", "No. Mine hasn't got that."

That excuse didn't woork on the RTA guy.

I guess that means it's very empty.
    Cheers, Billy.
    Keeping it simple is complicated.
