The motors, drive train and other bits were crated in from the USA. Quite a lot of the bits were made here, in the factory at Tullamarine (a suburb of Melbourne).
Many years ago I had a tour of the factory. I saw the graders being assembled and parts being made.
My father worked at Caterpillar many years ago.
It is not just cheap labour, the ability to set up a new plant helps significantly. I doubt there are many people complaining about the loss of work when you are putting in a new plant. Quality is built into a product it is not inspected into it. If you want a quality product you have to set out to do it and taking out human induced variations is one way to improve products.
Some of these things are cultural and take a while to change, the Asian countries with the exception of the more industrialised like Japan and Korea don't have a reputation for quality manufacturing. Sometimes it is easier to start with new plants and new ideas than trying to change organisations that have been doing things the old way for decades.
As a general statement as long as the engineering/essence/quality is built in by people that know what they are doing, the labour component is less critical.
This is not a new thing Land Rover have sourced parts world wide for many years, more so now that a lot of parts are coming out of exclusive licence agreements so Land Rover can source from else where, and suppliers can sell as None Genuine when technically they are, just not LR badged.
We get parts our of LRUk on a regular basis, a lot of the older part numbers seem to be UK made, a lot of the newer stuff, Turkey, USA, INDIA, CHINA etc etc.
They even make Land Rovers in China now.
I have heard ( completely anecdotally ), that manufacturing is beginning to filter out of China, solely because of the quality issue.
Cheers, Billy.
Keeping it simple is complicated.

If you think back, most English vehicles (m/cycles included) always leaked, as did some other European makes. For example it wasn't until the Japs proved that bikes could be made without lots of oil leaks that we saw any improvements. I suspect the poms, or some at least, were asleep during this period of dawning enlightenment.
