Let's change the way we look at speed.

I wonder if anyone can explain why speeding is so dangerous, according to AIS a couple of years back and a corresponding article in Modern Motor magazine that death as a direct result of speeding only accounted for 0.8% of all fatal accidents.
The biggest factor in death caused by road accidents is "INNATTENTION", way, way ahead of speeding, the Governments and Police know this so why don't they Target Innattentive drivers, maybe its easier and cheaper to use speed cameras and radar.
Much harder to book a driver for not watching the road, you have actually got to get out of your hiding spot and PATROL in the PATROL cars we provide, then pull that driver over and fill out forms and it costs the government more to run and maintain a Patrol vehicle that it does a speed camera.
Let's not kid ourselves governments are using the speed angle to gather revenue, end of story.
Innattention is not alone, most drivers on the road shouldn't have ever been given a license, Take roundabouts, 3 simple rules, 1. slow down when approaching a roundabout, 2. GIVE WAY to traffic entering or in the roundabout, 3. Indicate left turn when leaving roundabout where Practicable.
So bloody simple, SO WHY do 90+% of drivers GIVE WAY to their right, if you are entering the roundabout or in the roundabout you have RIGHT of WAY.
For Christ's sake I was behind a cops car the other day and we were at the roundabout, there was a vehicle approaching on our right at LEAST 30m. away and this cop props and gives way. What chance have we got surviving on our roads when most people have NO idea of the road rules or more importantly COMMON SENSE.
Speed does not KILL it is the dickhead behind the wheel that has no competency or common sense and who should never have been given the RIGHT to be on our roads.
Hands up all here that give way to the right at a roundabout, when you have the right of way, Regards Frank.

The government line is speed contributes to the accident severity, so speed kills. So if you were in a 40 kph zone and hit someone at 20 kph on a crossing then your speed contributed to the accident. Inattention is most probably the cause (either yours or the pedestrian). Btw: fatigue is also a big cause of accidents.

When the speed limit in suburban built up areas was reduced from 60klm/hr. to 40 and 50 klm/hr. the pedestrian road fatalaties INCREASED 12%, why?. People paying more attention to speed limit (which sometimes change 2 or 3 times in a Klm.) than pedestrians, Regards Frank.

I agree Tank. Arbitrary set speed limits are the silliest idea period IMO
110kph on a road in heavy rain, thick fog or poor conditions when all the traffic has slowed down to 60 or so to suit the conditions is nuts. As is the freeway (carparks) at peak hour 100kph limit standing still often is more than a little ironic. Conversely a clear road with no obstructions pedestrians or bikes on a nice day with a 40kph speed limit is silly as well.

I think a clear freeway should be higher than 110kph myself. I also think people who drive in the right hand lane at 20kph below the speed limit where other lanes are clear should lose their licences.
Happy to drive to the speed limits. Not happy speed limits are not smarter than most people are who slow down when conditions are bad and speed up when conditions are good. Not at all defending hoons who drive like idiots. Crush thier cars by all means IMO. I feel 'a reasonable speed' is not fixed arbitrary set speed limits.

I witnessed some speeding on the easter weekend. If there had been an accident, the report would have been "speed was involved". This would have been true but not telling the whole truth. The speed would have made the aftermath more grizzley but the stupidity would have caused the accident.

I share with you what I saw on the Saturday morning. Note the long length of double white lines in a 60 zone. It used to be single broken lines with a 100 limit but people kept killing themselves. Lowering the speed limit to 90, then 80, finally 60 has not stopped this and here's why.
Also note the lane splitting between the overtaken car and the oncoming car just before the dividing strip.

And the on the Monday, this fellow. The interesting thing about him is after he zoomed past me above the limit, he insisted on travelling at 100km/h in a 110km/h zone.
I guess he thought he was driving safely.

Although speed was involved in both incidents, if there had been an accident, it would have been caused by stupidity.

Where are the "stupid cameras"?
