And Golly Gee , no interconnector from NSW as yet.
I wonder who will pay for that one.
Good old NSW , the only one sensible enough to keep some coal fired stations going.
I wonder how much we will be able to charge per Kwh to those dumb SAs.

    Regards Philip A

    Not neccessary.
NSW will sell it to Vic for more money. Vic will probably be sucking it through the Heywood interconnector as well.
We've got electric trams and trains to keep going.
I hear Olympic Dam are worried about their energy security now.

NSW coal fired power stations are only running at around half of capacity, so they'll just be turned up a little more.

Ramsey welcomes POSCO interest | Whyalla News

POSCO has world-leading steel production technology, 'FINEX', which removes the need for a blast furnace.

They would like to bring this technology to Arrium with a proposal to expand overall production at Whyalla by 50%.
This would significantly boost steel output and see the creation of a new 220 MW power plant, which would meet Arrium's own power requirements and assist in providing electricity supply and security for the state.
The plant would use waste gas generated by the FINEX process, as is already happening at the POSCO operation in Pohang.

You've clearly not gained any idea on how the eastern seaboard grid works have you

Also, amazed how now your solution is to merely burn more coal in other stations

And again, they don't run at half capacity as you suggest, the have units on or off, there is no turning up a little more as you suggest, boilers don't work like this, as already explained to you

Try and atleast glean a little technical understanding on how it all works, it need not change your view, but atleast your comments would make sense

Seriously mate, talk about nit-picking. I was talking about the total of coal-fired plants in NSW. Obviously I meant the overall plants in NSW would turn on more boilers so the plants run at a higher rate if more baseload is required.

Posco did once put in an offer but the arrogant Chairman at the time rejected it (wouldn't be in its current mess if they had taken it).

The workings at their most basic would be an expectation of revenue v costs over remaining life. Remaining life is a variable, in part dependent on how much you want to spend on maintenance, for plants of that age I suspect this will be a large cost. Even if on balance the plant itself makes a small net profit once you add in the overseas management time / strategy then closure may still be chosen. Of course the uncertainty over Australia's carbon management strategy will not be helping either.

Its a tough outcome for those affected.
