Expecting a long and geographically sparse grid to stand up to the storms we've had is pretty unrealistic. To put every power line underground would be nice but hardly affordable in the current economic climate. So asking people to plan ahead a little isn't unrealistic.
100% agree, but think that cost is the problem. Outlay for a Generator that's big enough to run a house, and getting it setup to do just that can be a $3000 to $6000 exercise, and most won't do it due to the lack of use. We plan to use ours on the truck when we are away, and have also set the new build up to accommodate it. That said, asking for compensation every time the wind blows and the power goes out is not on. We are pretty well set up now, and the Genset will be pressed into action on Sat powering all the gear at a wedding in the middle of nowhere!

Power was just switched off for 40 minutes.
SA currently don't have enough power available to meet demand. They are currently load shedding areas for about 40 minutes at a time.
Where are all those abundant and free renewables?

Get your genny fired up Simon.

Looks like another AEMO stuff up, couldn't be bothered reading the weather forecast and forgot to order enough generating capacity. Apparently a 250MW unit at Pelican Point sat idle as 200MW of expected load was backed by 150MW of available capacity.
