Big storm and no power in SA

this is interesting. a trip of a PP can lead to a voltage disturbance, which can knock solar off the grid, which can cause an increase in demand, which can further destabilise the grid.

no, seriously, if the interconector wasnt being used and the additional 500MW was provided by wind, the state would of gone black.

let me get this straight.

the owners of northern wanted 140million to keep 500MW of generation at northern going.

instead, the solution is to spend 350million for a 250MW gas generation plant when there is talk of gas shortages.

One is a coal base load plant way past its use by date, the other is a clean modern efficient peaking plant that is there primarily for insurance on hot afternoons. Quite a difference I should think. A gas storage may be the answer to lack of supply on high demand days. Just like grid sized batteries are part of the solution. BTW wind and solar aren't going away any time soon, peaking capacity will be much more useful in the near future than more inflexible base load.

as you said several pages ago, do the end users care how it gets generated?
the $140mil was to bring the plant up to spec.
gas storage might be the answer yes, but that requires more money.

wind and solar go away all the time. every time its calm and cloudy actually.

coal can be used for peaking capacity and, it also provides a spinning reserve which wind & solar cant.
