Contacted Pickles about this one as i was interested in buying. Turns out it's been fully submerged in salt water.
Theres also an exact same one up for auction at Pickles in Brisbane, looks good.
Brett.
Well as long as it had one of those electronic rust things on it all should be fine.
Don't know what happens after it comes out of the water.

isnt it the case when it is a complete write off it cannot be re registerd?
There's a difference of definition.
Written off for insurance just means that insurance don't think it's worth paying to take the car back to standard.
Written off by an engineer(?) or written off mechanically means that there is no way to safely get it back on road.
I'd imagine that some wouldn't be too troubled at a cheap Defender with possible rust and electrical problems in the future. After all not like we don't know they're coming. Also could be difficultly of picking up stuff like ecu, etc.
There was a post the other day about insuror not being able to get a replacement turbo and the trouble they had to go through.
Cheers
Simon
Poor thing![]()
I thought that any vehicle that had been submerged in salt water was automatically a statutory write off, and the vin was unable to be re-registered. I thought that was a national thing but it might just be in QLD.
Bruce.
There would still be quite a bit in the way of parts though, the engine would clean up, you would need to strip it first though, but for a project engine that would be fine. Matt

In QLD definetely - and the WOVR (Written Off Vehicle Register) is nationwide. There are 2 types of "write offs".
Statutory write off - unable to be registered again
Repairable write off - able to be re-registered with a "repairable write off certificate" (available from a very few certified folks) and a "safety certificate."
WOVR policy states in relation to water.
"A motor vehicle or trailer that has been immersed in
salt water above the doorsill level for any period or
fresh water up to the dashboard or steering wheel for more
than 48 hours."
So you could only buy it for parts if she's been immersed in salt water.
You wouldn't want to have the thing anyway - in a few years it would crumble like cake, particularly the chassis (rustproofed or not) - I've seen plenty of them.
