Who will pay for the construction guards etc ? Or private for profit companies only interested in the vacancy rate to operate these facilities. Putting the inmates to work is great , boredom breeds negativity, but if the chain gang starts taking the work from those who are attempting to build a business without subsidised, they lose .
Sure commit the crime pay the price. But neither straight forward punishment nor the nice cuddle has worked. Time to use our heads to rationally find a workable solution. No matter when where or type of government there has always been crime for whatever reason.

Didn't they also charge the families of those executed by firing squad for the bullets ? Or was this an urban myth ?

Yes, dead right. start gaoling willy nilly and where do you put them and how is the bill going to be paid. In Qld. in the mid 70's the then govt. decided to gaol for 6 months everybody convicted of driving whilst licence suspended or cancelled. Had to stop as the jails became full to overflowing. As the current prison system is already full to the rooftops new prisons would have to be built.

Exactly, AND, mandatory 14 day gaol term would work wonders, it would actually decrease the crime rate, & could, when would be thugs know what's going to happen to them, decrease the number of inmates. That is what Mayor Guilliani did in New York,.."You do the crime, You do the time"..decreased the crime rate by 60%.

That would be because of the sentencing rules, which are set by the government, not magistrates. Remember that next time some politician says the judges are too soft - the politicians make the rules.

I'd rather see ice addicts sent on compulsory detox programs. Maybe some might then kick the habit.

Absolutely right.
But as far as the “detox” bit goes,,, 14 days in the slammer will slow them up somewhat to start with, and from there, straight into reabilitation.

I quite agree with the idea of gaoling many offenders who currently get away with fines, suspended sentences, community service orders and the like. Six months minimum in a strict regime penitentiary would smarten up the thinking of many. Repeat high range drink drivers for a start. All persons caught with illegal drugs in their systems should do time without the option and a felony conviction recorded. This would hamper their future education and employment prospects and would be a deterrent. The prison time would act as a detox programme. Cold turkey, boys and girls. Sweat, shake, and shiver it out of your system. Drug dealers to get a minimum 10 years without parole.
