Mick you disappointed. I thought it would take you about a minute to make a comment like that but you took what, 5? Haha. I nearly changed that comparison as I was writing it but left it in as I guessed you wouldn't be able to resist it. Good stuff. Cheers

No such thing as Australian values [ according to a survey.] All values are shared values, as this thumbnail suggests.

Yes, values are combined in different ways in different places, but they are, above all, shared. No group of people has a monopoly on fairness, kindness, opportunity, justice, personal liberty, property rights, the rule of law and so on.

Oi: no such thing as Australian values

I am rather busy at the moment.
And they reckon males can't multitask.

I spent a while looking for a bottle of wine I have. I bought it at Aldi for $20. They reckon it tastes just like Grange. I wanted to share that with the forum. I must have drunk it.

You see, the law is supposed to reflect community expectations and values.

Let's go back to the start point.

There are two principal features of the rule of law.
*The people (including the government) should be ruled by the law and obey it.
*The law should be such that the people will be able and willing to be ruled (or guided) by it.

i.e. all people are equal in the eyes of the law and the law reflects the peoples values and expectations.
What we have seen in many cases (which is why I suspect Mr Pickles started this thread) is the judiciary appears to be out of touch with the community. Also, from a few of the cases that have hit the headlines, some are more equal than others.

I'll end this post with a quote from Nicholas Cowdery AM QC which supports both what you are saying AND what I am saying. It is a requirement to be met before it can be said that the rule of law is truly in operation in any jurisdiction.
Mick, I'm not denying that all vocations are part of the community. My polnt is that most of the community are fired up and manipulated by media outlets, more intent on selling their wares, than promoting fairness and justice.
I'm surprised that you, of all people, promoting the view that uninformed, Joe Average is qualified to pass sentence. I've often admired your debating prowess, because you arm yourself with and use the facts. How do you think Joe Average can cast judgment, lacking the facts?

It would want to be four bottles at $20. Birds on a Wire and Sweet Lips spring to mind.

Law & order seem to have worked ok here, in this case. And the Police were looking for him over his parole breach. Probably why it took only 72 hours to get him.

I don't recall saying Joe Average should cast judgment.

If Mr Joe Average represents society, then the judiciary should pass a sentence that is within the expectations of Mr Joe Average.
If this is not seen to be done, some members of society may decide it is up to them to dispense justice. We are already getting vigilante groups patrolling the streets.
Oh, sorry, they are "Resident Patrol Groups", not vigilante groups.
