Yea i know prisons man, its the privatization and monopoly on the system that allows them to cash in on it trust me. Dont think it actually costs that much to house and feed and inmate.
It well may cost the tax payer that much, but thats only because fat cat A is associated to fat cat B and he has a business with a friend fat cat C who likes to run prisons, and if they give him green lights he will scratch there back this way and that.
Meh i dunno man this stuff used to be obvious.

    To the rest....

Most of you would have heard of the young girl , missing, and the black ute, with the body in the barrel. The police have him trapped in a unit, and even though he is armed, have declared they want him unharmed. Say what you like, I'm Impressed with that policing attitude.

    I agree
I think that in the vast majority of times the police do an outstanding job, Everything often turns to Mud when the crims enter the judicial system unfortunately and the polices efforts are often a waste of time.

a year or two ago there was two sieges in the same month in adelaide. both times the suspect was shot by the police.
i joked to my police officer mate, can SAPOL end a siege without someone being shot?
he missed the joke and answered no, its not taught in training anymore.

In Qld negotiators are assigned to SERT and do a fantastic job. SERT officers are not negotiators and they are called in to address high risk. If things heat up and negotiations fail then SERT has a job to do and they are very professional. They have options including non lethal (eg. Queen St Mall a few years ago).

Judges dont always get it right but overall our judicial system is the best in the world. That doesn't mean things can't be improved but mandatory sentencing and over involvement of politicians with a 3-4 year outlook only is not the way. There is a hell of a lot that goes into sentencing and it's an unenviable task.

    Cheers

I would think that the outcome of any siege involving firearms is entirely dependant on how the person reacts.
If they were to surrender peacefully without having a firearm on them i would imagine that they would have a 99.99% chance of coming out unscathed.
If the police have to storm the building or the suspect was to come out armed then i dont like their chances.
There is no doubt that the police involved in these sieges are risking their lives and if they feel threatened by the suspect they will undoubtedly fire on them and i dont blame them one bit for doing this.
