Six months home detention, in a luxurious house, for child sex offences? Do you think a bricklayer would have been given such a lenient punishment?
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

Yea thats a hard one to swallow man. Im actually surprised that was the judgement given the public was watching but here we are. What a wonderful world.
Church has more pull than we the common man can know clearly. I wish i knew the truth, i suspect that would be the real bombshell.

Or lets say your a schizophrenic and you have a med change, a month later you have an episode and do something bad.

These sort of possible situations have to be looked at on there merit.

To simply say Murder is Murder.... Meh thats a little nieve.

Thankfully we have judges who adjudicate these cases and not the public vocal minorities or we would have mass hangings.
You, as is everybody else, are entitled to your opinion, unlike many places in the world,..... but, I disagree with you.
As far as I'm concerned, you take some one elses life, some one elses son, daughter, brother, or whatever, YOU pay the price.
Julian Knight & Martin Bryant claimed similar "ëxcuses" as this woman.
    Just IMHO of course, Pickles.

Sounds like you have not been around much mental illness? Cant be a bastard of a thing. Courts consider it a defense for a reason. I mean if it was baloney then the prosecutors would see through it right?

I met Julian actually not that long after he went inside many many moons ago in K division or what was formally known as Jika Jika. (after fires).
He did do time in the military and was bullied blah blah. Guy was a tool but there is always more to the story. He did have issues though. PTSD among other things.
Martin Bryant lol. I dont even think he did that to be honest. His IQ was very low and the shooting was that of a marksman, better even. Very controversial that one. Save that one for another thread i think.

Any justice system is all about making people responsible for their actions and holding them to account.
Unfortunately it is now becoming harder and harder to hold transgressors accountable for their actions due to the various excuses that are now becoming acceptable such as drug/alchohol abuse , insanity and a myriad of other excuses.
Sure there are "crazies" out there that commit murder and rape But that doesnt mean that they should be allowed to remain on the streets.
Then you have the high profile pollies, clergy and business men that feign illness or memory loss to evade justice and because they have the financial means to employ the best legal minds in the country they get away with this time after time.
Yes we have a Legal system But we do Not have a Justice system in this country.

Trout i realise that you have an entrenched view about our legal system. I won't bother trying to change it. Your call and I can't be bothered. But you might be interested to know that if its one thing Judges hate it's someone who feigns illness, blackouts, poor memory etc as an excuse - and their dislike of this is amplified when it comes to intelligent people who are leaders of industry. They also have no time for their own breaking the law. Lawyers who steal from trust accounts etc are dealt with with longer sentences than non lawyers who steal from their employers etc. Having been in the industry for nearly 3 decades I can assure you of these things. Most judges are hard working and do their best to get it right. Yes having the best legal representation helps - no doubt - but only within the confines of the law. I have seen time and time again people feigning mental illness etc and being caught out. There are a number of high profile people in Qld getting ripped through the system now and they are not being given special treatment.

    Cheers

I agree totally. It happens all the time actually. And most often the judges wont have a bar of it.

The law is relaxed on rich, popular or religious though. There seems to be a double standard to some extent.
Perhaps this is simply related to there ability to afford better representation or perhaps not.

All that said i do feel safe going to court in Australia. I know the framework is in place for me to appeal if i feel wrongly done and im unlikely to be railroaded by the judge.
A system that is generally speaking bloody good. Better than anywhere else i can think of! Like most things in Australia. We dont do a bad job of it. Nothing is perfect though.

For sure mate. It's always a work in progress! While improvements can always be made (and we should as a community strive to make them) if i was going to face court as a litigant or accused (never a nice thing) there is no other country I would rather be in.

    Cheers

Hidden in white text was "Obviously this is not me rather a poor attempt at a joke."

I thought that was obvious though man. I mean we all know it needed 2 ropes.
