Like many people you misunderstand the definition of welfare.

Unemployment benefits are 2.5c in the dollar. And that figure even includes other (sickness?) benefits.

The 35c number you have, is composed of:

Item % of budget or c in $1
Assistance to the aged | 13.8
Assistance to veterans and dependents | 1.4
Assistance to people with disabilities | 7.5
Assistance to families with children | 8.1
Assistance to the unemployed and the sick | 2.5
Other welfare programs | 0.3
Assistance for Indigenous Australians nec* | 0.5
General Administration | 0.8
|
TOTAL | 35.0

So which one should we cut first? Pensions? Disability support services?

AFAIK it covers disability pensions, family payments and things like youth allowance, rent assistance etc.

It seems really broad. And i don't have a problem with most of the initiatives, nor the people who take advantage of them. There are definitely people out there who have few, if any other options.

Maybe it is what needs to be spent there. But it seems too high to me.

You missed the biggest one - old age pensions. See my post above.

You must also remember Murdoch got a $880 million tax refund that was not challenged, so in effect we each paid Rupert $35.
It's a good diversion tactic so we don't actually focus on the billions in lost tax avoidance income, rather than the pittance stolen by a few welfare recipients.

I was unemployed when I first finished school for almost 3 months, I did have a casual job but it was limited to 5hrs and one day a week. During that time I applied for well over 120 jobs, maybe heard back From 15 and got 5 interviews, landing my first full time job.
The problem then and now was youth unemployment was 25%, in my area even higher at around 33% so most companies would be buried with applications. Which results in no replies and some people either give up or become resigned to being jobless.

Yes and 200 of our top companies paid nil tax while whingeing about the supposed 'welfare burden' - just selfish hypocrites!

It's actually a diversion tactic, "look, look at that guy in the ugly shirt he's scary just don't investigate the cause of all the leaks in our boat causing us to sink We became captain on a promise to fix the holes and reduce the flooding but now are trying to cut an even bigger hole in the boat to let more flow in!

I looked for 3 days and landed 6 interviews with 4 options to start.

Ive received 3 cold calls and turned down one "sounds like you know what you need to whered you get the add from you're the only call up weve had? don't know how the job got into that advertisement but since youve called can you start last monday? " which was in kalgoorlie

Ive taken the one that pays the most and keeps me closest to home for now.

Things are starting to pick up quite well up here at the moment Dave. I know of a couple of places looking for mechanics / HD diesel fitters. My young bloke has just been promoted to w/shop foreman where he is, and they are looking for fitters.

Hell, even I got an e-mail earlier today inviting me to an interview for a locally based position, and I haven't really been looking that hard - and I'm pushing 60. ;)

My daughter became unemployed last Friday - the business she has been working at for quite some time now closed the doors and the owners are selling up and retiring. She started in a new job this morning. The new job is not exactly what she wants, but will keep her going until she either grows to like it or finds something better.

The work is out there for those prepared to get off their arse and look for it. ;)

Good to hear.

There is still 85% unemployment among exploration geologists though. So the work may be out there in general, but for some it may be an unskilled job rather than the area they are qualified in. I know one exploration geo who is back at uni studying medicine and another couple working as gardeners...

I'm 42 with a civil / structural engineering degree and ten years experience as a draftsman and was unemployed for 6 months, made redundant in November last year as no work on.

That's the first time I've been on benefits in 20 years apart from ausstudy while I did my degrees. I got paid $238 a fortnight, as I was paying a mortgage and not renting a house, otherwise I would have gotten $400 ish. I applied for probably a hundred jobs, from engineering and drafting to fruit picking, retail, labouring, needed anything just to get by. In that time I got 2 interviews, one phone and one face to face, and got rejected on both.

Very disheartening the whole thing, after 6 months you have to do work for the dole. I think the "employment agencies" :angrylock:are partly to blame, as they get money to have you on their books, and do nothing of any value. :wasntme:

In February I had had enough so I borrowed some money from my dad (thanks dad :))to pack up my house and drive 4000 km to Melbourne where the unemployment is a lot less than regional Qld. I took a 16 week contract in May as a draftsman, and I'm still there :), and I hope it lasts :o cause being unemployed sucks, and its harder than having a job with all the constant forms and interviews, and crap you have to go through!

Of course the jobs are there,....."IF", you "REALLY" want one.
This ain't "C.A." so I ain't bringing Politics into this thread, so it would be good if others do not do so also,...or create another thread in C.A., if you feel the need.
I'm proud of my kids. Neither of them excelled in school, they were probably below average, but they've never been on welfare, just tried to get a job.
My daughter has had a number of jobs, going back a number of years, some in Govt Depts, remember the C.E.S.??, and she tells me that what people get away with by utilising "loopholes" & policy is absolutely disgusting.
She herself, has just found another job, after the birth of her second child,...with no problems at all. She could've got welfare, but decided upon employment,....said it makes her feel better, gives her a sense of achievement, & able to make her oown way in life.......and let me tell you, she is an absolutely RIPPER mother.
