I've seen some dreadful behaviour toward tourist workers, by Australian employers, I had to rescue a young couple, sacked on the spot and evicted, by a drunken bully, 300km from civilisation.
I am in no way suggesting that all employers are bad, I've seen plenty of instances where both parties are happy.

Don't get me wrong I dont want to see anyone ripped off , but it's a fine line, make to to unviable and we will see all our fruit come from oversea's , like a lot of other industries that have gone that way.
I look at the fishing companies and see we are 1 of the last fisheries that are still employing majority australian workforce. Most of the other fisheries are going all Indonesian crew.
As for the backpackers spending most of the money yes and no - think the Darwin council is owed about $1 million from all the fines not paid by backpackers camping in any park or reserve they like , where as the grey nomads are left to pay the price of the van parks because they are able to be traced to a residence in Australia.
I don't know what it's like elsewhere but from what I see up here, they should be made to contribute like everyone else who uses the infrastructure in the country - fair enough give them back the super but tax is tax. Most have quickly worked out that if they go to a hospital in this country they don't get turned away or asked to pay like elsewhere.
Just my view on things as I see it.

If they paid their fines the money would be wasted by the Council, leaving less to be spent wisely by private enterprise, including fisheries. ;)
I would rather the council have the extra million to waste than keep slugging me more each year just to have some money to waste.:DQuote:

I use backpackers weekly as casual workers, the tax increase you speak of will have little to no affect in my view as they are leaving Europe and other countries where there is 50% or more unemployment in there age group and with the open boarders policy it's getting worse not better.Quote:

Interesting thing about backpackers tax, they get it all back once they do there return. Only in the country a short while. I'm not sure how much tax is retained by the ato, but a few that have gone through this area have said they get all back.
