Do fewer young people want driving licences?

Thanks for that - I didn't realise it had already changed. Doesn't make much difference though -all the highways round here are two lane roads with limits of either 100 or 110, and few passing opportunities. And the Newell and Mitchell have heavy traffic.

And to reinforce what was mentioned earlier - learner's permits are valid in any state or territory, but as with other road rules, you must conform to the rules in the state you are in. In other words, you must not exceed 90 on an 'L'plate in NSW, even if you can in the state it was issued.

can you even buy a paper street directory anymore??

I remember having it sit on my lap or holding it on the steering wheel and glance down.

At least map apps have audio therefore reducing the need to take your eyes off the road.

Both my boys, now aged 22 and 24 got their licenses on their 18 birthday.

They got their learners permit at 16 and had their 120 hours in less than 18 months.

My son filled his book in correctly as well. He did the whole 120 hours (most of them with me) which took us about 2 years. I was all ready to congratulate him, when he came home after taking his drivers test, as I was sure that he would have no problem passing. But he informed me that they wouldn't let him go for his test, as there was a problem with his log book. I had on one occasion about a year and a half earlier, made a miscalculation and it worked out the he had only done 112 hours and not the 120 that he needed. I couldn't believe that they had checked through all those pages and had found the one mistake in the whole book. :oops2:My poor son had to wait another two weeks and do another 8 hours before he could take his test again.
