I doubt imaginary friends have time to convince Cows to Part...![]()
I think there is a lot of crap talked about the HiLux by haters, just as there is about Land Rovers by LR haters.
I'm driving the latest SR5 and it's a great 4x4 ute. Only real issue is that the unladen ride isn't quite right on-road. No worse than a D-Max but not as good as Ranger.
2.8 diesel is a gem and the 6-speed manual is great, so good I'd prefer it over the auto. Averaging 7.7 L/100 at the moment and you learn to ignore the DPF running through a burn cycle.
I'd buy one and I don't think I'm a bogan. Wasn't last time I looked.
Agree with most of this - I've got the 6 speed Auto in mine and that is very well matched to the engine - the new 2.8 is a very nice engine - runs rings around the old 3 litre in every department.
The only reason I wouldn't buy one with my own money is that they aren't good value IMO as per my last post - similar offerings for much less. I'm happy to have work pay for one though, and I don't tooling around in mine everyday either.![]()

Just don't take a new Lux offroad, in water, or expect its injectors or clutch to hold out...
The motor is smoother for sure, but they're starting to see problems with the vehicles on the fleet... far sooner than the old model..
I assume the figures include the 4x2 hilux as well as the 4x4 hilux.
I would have 1 if Toyota wanted to give me 1. It has consistently been in the top few selling vehicles so they must be doing something right.
I have a Ford Ranger work ute and its a pretty uninspiring, and the ride is far better with 500kg in the tray than it is with the tray empty.
My 1967 V8 XR Ford ute is a different story - that's just
Cheers Ean
That doesn't surprise me - squeezing more HP and torque from a smaller engine - that was always going to mean a shorter life span.
I've been driving mine for almost exactly a year and done a smidge under 50,000KM and it's still ok at the moment. I need to get 3 more years and another 150,000KM out of it yet, so I'll report back later....![]()

Road goer? Probably be ok... suspension and steering wise.
Yeah, will be interesting to see how it goes long term - it is a road goer for the most part, and will never do anything more than easy to medium off road stuff very occationally (only times it's been in 4WD so far is on the inlaws farm the other week when it wouldn't climb a small hill in 2WD and a couple of tracks near the river I've poked my head down to look for camp sites).
It does tow quite regularly - mostly around 2,000KG but recently I've been dragging around a new 3,000Kg trailer mounted genset with it to show customers - it actually tows it very well. Can sit on what I need to on the freeway (I'm not supposed to tow it faster than 80, but I generally sit on 90 with it) and it's fine.
Time will tell where the weak spots are, I've never got through any of my work vehicles leases without at least 1 major issue. Worst one I ever had was a Ford Transit - I think it was an 08 model. It was fine for 2 years then the problems started. Flywheel, clutch, turbo, radiator, boost hoses, inter cooler, flywheel again (they upgraded it to a new style after the second failure - very common issue I believe at the time) another clutch, rear suspension and diff. It spent over 2 months in 1 year at the dealers being repaired - the Boss got very fun shy of them after that - we were running 8 at the time and mine wasn't the only one spending a long time being repaired, so I'm used to hire cars as lease vehicles get older...![]()
