    Yep, that's what it might sound like. The farm socks are not a refined fine woolen sock to start with but they were a well maintained piece of clothing. They had to be. Lots of ground to walk and foot care was vital. It was a result of the limitations of living in a winter NZ bush camp (rain, sleet, frost and snow), cold water riverside or if late at night, bucket hand wash and fireside or dog-bed drying, and they'd almost be felted heels and soles after a winter of darning and walking around all day damp.
