I think you mean Wolfgang Gullich - he was the stunt double for Stallone in Cliffhanger. Stallone hardly made it off the ground for the movie.

Interestingly he died on an autobahn- you'd think the best sport climber in the world would have had a more spectacular end.

I thought that honour went to the 1959 version of "Journey to the Centre of the Earth", but maybe you are right.
