Tell that to the people of Florida. Big storm there saw many a wet Tesla, which burst into flames. Who says water puts out fires?

They had better be careful, even Chinese Lanterns have a habit of self igniting in certain circumstances.

But but but, wouldn't they have water leak tested the vehicles ex production line in a wind tunnel?

They would have, wouldn't they, wouldn't they?

LOTS. &. LOTS of water needed to put out a lithium-battery fire... - and available for some time afterwards as they can re-ignite.

STEAM - driven/augmented cars are beginning to look "interesting", again.

Yeah, why is that, Water contains Oxygen but it'd have to be the cooling effect that knocks it back unless a Lithium Fire is as hot as old ****ery.
. But why do they seem to self ignite with no actual heat source? ICE's don't appear to that. Chemical reaction? But why?

I guess my questions should be addressed to the AULRO Fire Services.

Remember the fire triangle? Three things needed. Fuel, Heat, Air.
Lithium fires only need heat and fuel. Once started they create their own heat in the form of 'Thermal Runaway'.
This is what makes them so hard to extinguish and so hot. Li-ion fires can reach over 1000 degrees C pretty quickly. New caravans with lithium batteries installed now have to have the compartment sealed from the living area.
Due to the industry I work in I have recently found you can get Lithium-ion fire extinguishers. Foam and Dry Chemical extinguishers are basically useless on a Li-ion fire.
If you have a Li-ion battery on your house to capture solar, I'd probably invest in a Li-ion extinguisher.

Lithium iron batts can produce all three elements of the fire triangle, which is why it's next to impossible to extinguish them by conventional means. Many of us have seen the vid of the completely submerged Tesla burning furiously. No way I'm parking near one of these IEDs.
