This morning I had the opportunity to ask the perpetrator of this nonsense to clarify just what it was that his mate (or the relation of a friend of his mate) had seen in the RR handbook.
He repeated the same claim so I suggested that his mate was probably having him on since I had searched a lot of online RR handbooks and found no such thing and that none of the RR owners who had checked their handbooks had found anything like that.
He acknowledged that it was ridiculous to think that any vehicle handbook would have such a statement and he looked so sheepish and embarrassed, that I offered the suggestion that it might have something to do with space saver spares, run flat tyres or roadside assist towing.
The enthusiasm with which he embraced those possibilities suggested to me that he felt rather foolish about having told his original story.
I don't imagine he will learn from the experience. (Maybe I was too kind.) It just seems to be in his nature to repeat anything that confirms his beliefs, no matter how unlikely it is.
