It's certainly true that mental illness is under-diagnosed and counseling and mental health services are seriously under-funded. Taxpayers don't want to pay the cost of funding them properly.
Saying the cops should have just shot him ignores reality. From what I saw he was not threatening people when he was doing burnouts so shooting was not justified. You can't shoot people just because they might do something bad
As for him being on bail, lots of people are on bail. Do we really want to lock up even more people? Should know a lot more about his criminal history before commenting, I think.

Pretty sure you'll find VicPol aren't allowed to ram, seeing as it seems everyone in Victoria cried out that the police shouldn't be allowed to chase criminals or employ controlled violence or action (I.e ramming, PIT), which has lead to VicPol basically having to resort to hugs and stern words to deal with this sorts of people.
Imagine if after this bloke stabbed his brother, and before he got in the car he was shot.
'Typical police brutality, why didn't they just shoot him in the legs'
'He only had a knife, why didn't they just tackle him?'
We either allow our police to employ controlled aggression and stand by them in such instances, or we don't and we accept the consequences

There was a spectacular car chase around here about 2 years ago which ended when an unmarked police car did a u turn in front of the offender &" t " boned it. The officer involved was charged with either dangerous or careless driving. So it seems little has changed..:(

Dave it's all governments, even the previous government, naysayer Ted Baillieu and Doc Napthine, and the previous government before them didn't so anything either, they are tarred with the same brush.
There are too many do gooders sticking up for criminals and getting them back on the streets.

Doubt it'll make much difference though. There aren't many politicians with the balls to take on the legal fraternity, and the snivel libertarians and other do gooders will still push for the "rights" of criminals no matter what.
