Transmission Noise - Puma in soft sand

The time had come to take the 2016 Puma to Moreton Island for some serious off-road sand work. The vehicle performs fantastic in what is in many patches very soft (to the point of being powdery) and and deeply rutted sand. I have driven it in all modes (high range, low range, diffs engaged and off) but mostly it does just fine in HR without diff locks.

What is really disconcerting (alarming) is a sort of grinding-growling noise that appears periodically when it encountered particularly soft sand. It is almost the reverse of the ABS brakes being activated. The location of the noise appears to come slightly forward from the foot well on the driver side.

I have driven many Defenders (supplied by work) in soft sand, but never encountered this. Has anyone else experienced this and should I be alarmed?

    Many thanks
    Thomas

Traction control would be my first thought.

Very likely the Traction control. The modulator is in front and above the drivers footwell.

    I agree also.. TC..

By the way Thomas - once on sand lock the CDL. Don't think "it will be fine". It's not a diff lock, it's a centre diff lock and they don't like the loads offroad unlocked...

If it's a loose surface - lock it... you'll appreciate not breaking the CDL by not locking it, and the vehicle will perform better.

Sounds like TC. Look for the light on the dash flashing.

Thanks Jc - can I switch TC off? I know this sounds like a dumb question, but having grown up with zero electronic 4WDs, I am baffled why one needs it...

Thanks Toombie for sage advice. I have done quite the wrong thing in the past it appears as the vehicle goes "just fine" with the CDL disengaged. Will lock it from now on.

    Thanks again

    a quick example,
    drive onto some firm sand,
now do a complete circle with the cdl unlocked,
now lock it and do another,
now get out and check the difference!

Yes the circle will be wider.. with CDL on..

When driving it unlocked that poor little centre diff is banging torque all over the place from slip front to rear..

That's when things start to wear/break and get noisy.

No need to place undue stresses..
