After a lot of involvement with the "Training" industry a few years back, I came to the conclusion that it is one of the greatest rorts that this country has ever seen. The worst examples of the rort seem to be where training is related to "workplace safety".

No sooner do you get yourself and/or your workforce compliant with the current training standards, some arsehole decides to change the standards so that you have to go through it all again. I've lost count of the number of days I've wasted sitting through training courses and "inductions" which all "taught" me exactly the same thing. Many of the people running / presenting these courses did not have a clue about the content of the course they were presenting ................. had never worked in the industry themselves and their "knowledge" was derived purely from the course documents and pictures.

I'm actually a qualified workplace trainer & assessor myself, and hold nationally accredited tickets in that plus operation of a range of mobile plant. I've often though that I should have gone into the training industry. Set myself up as an RTO and rip off mining companies and others by telling them that their employees simply could not survive without the training that I could offer them .................... but I've got a conscience.
    Cheers .........

Yes BMKal, I have to agree.
A bit like all that ISO quality assurance thing that took off back in the late nineties.
Then there was also the Y2K Bug thing, and all the coin spent on that, because someone thought the world was going start turning in reverse.
    It all generates income!

    Cheers, Mick.

I'm still waiting on the VBA form but things are slowly happening..
GG, To ensure you don't drill into the dirt beneath the slab when installing the hoist, make certain That area is also more than deep enough for the proposed fixings. I'd suggest 50-100mm deeper than your bolts are long in that area.

    Shed Update

    Hi All,

The shed build still hasn't started, although things are getting closer...

Firstly - the shed was delivered just over a week ago:

The Eagle eyed among you will notice that there are 2 roller doors... Which is interesting considering that I only ordered 1...

Last weekend a mate and I picked-up my Dexion racking... A really big day (10 hours), a rental truck, and 200km round trip... But worth it in the end.

The plan is to have (basically) 20mtrs long, 840mm deep, 3 shelves high... And a couple of work benches as well...

Everything is ready to go.... I have to chase up the concreter - again.....

    Cheers,
    GG.

Yes, I'm a qualified workplace trainer and assessor myself, in a different field to yours of course, so I agree there is a lot of waffle and box-ticking goes on. Still, it is important to try to reduce the quite high rate of deaths and injuries on worksites. For example, I see the company in charge when a trench collapsed and killed two blokes up here recently is now being prosecuted.
Even in my supposedly safe field of education, a bloke fell off a ladder and broke his neck, so it happens. As a result we all had to do a course and pass a test in how to use a ladder, which was boring as, but it only takes one bad accident to justify it.
If I started talking about safety and students, I could talk for hours. Every single activity requires a risk assessment, because teenagers do stupid things. Imagine the risk assessment for taking 110 Year 7s to Canberra for five days.

I just put in a small shed compared to yours, and got a number of concrete quotes and got a guy who seemed great and did a nice finished job.

As for the hoist, are you going 4 or 2 post? I have decided to allow for a 4 post and everyone I spoke to said 100mm standard reinforced is more than enough? Even the places selling them, and IO only needed to worry about extra footings/thickness if I was getting a 2 post.

My slab ranged between 125 and 140 through the hoist bay on top of 200mm of compacted base so I'm hoping this is fine. And as two concreter's told me - you jack half your car up on a single axle stand and that doesn't go through your old shed which has a measured 80mm slab so I'm hoping I did the right thing.

I have heard lots of idea's on sealing the concrete ranging from fence stain to specialised $300 a tin products.

    Shed Update

    Hi All,

Well yesterday started off well with a phone call from the site cut/concreter - they were starting!!!

When I came home, I had to stop 1/3rd of the way up my driveway because it was blocked - they had saved the top layer of the driveway crushed rock for later use:

Walking further up the driveway, turning left - you can see the orchard/garden bed - a work in progress... This area is what was left of the dog run, repurposed.. :

I am now standing on the TOP of the site - which means that I will be looking down at the shed roof, on the right of the picture:

Walking further along - closer to the house - again the shed roof will be on the right:

Now I am back down, standing on the drive-way - the large pile of dirt is basically where the shed will live:

Now I am standing at the edge of the concrete apron, looking back down the driveway.. Basically the dirt has been cut and moved from the right, and smoothed out to the left.. I rekon that I could easily park 5 cars there..

And finally (after I moved the 101 onto the concrete apron this morning) - here is the 101 looking at the pile of dirt, that will be turned into a shed...

Anybody need any dirty fill? Lol - there is quite a bit of it, and it's filled with rock / shale...

I'll post a few more photo's over the coming days, and then I'm off on a trip so not much more will happen...

    Cheers,
    The Grey Ghost

Holy crap! Knowing the site well, all I can say is 'Ay Carumba!'

So, the fill they've moved across the driveway - how does that affect the low road to the wood shed?

And, if I'm seeing things right, there's going to be plenty of room outside the shed to swing into it - I wasn't sure how this was going to pan out as I couldn't quite envision it, but it looks bloody fantastic!

Where's the rest of the dirt going?

The existing terrain certainly lends itself to that.

There's also a camping area there too - we could start a new trip - 'Winter Wondong'
