SA law says you can make/receive phone calls if you have a hands free setup.

With all these wonderful do-dads taking your attention off the road, I wonder with their proliferation if the accident rate will start going up instead of down.....

So does the law over here, and as far as I'm aware - in every other state in Australia too.
    Cheers .........

As Eevo said, quite legal to use the mobile if you don't touch it. I can make and recieve calls without touching mine, so quite legal. I can actually text without touching it too, but I don't as the voice recognition is a bit iffy.

I have replied to texts with 'ok' or similar as the car lets you do it all by voice.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

They tell you about all the fabulous connectivity (which you may not need),while secretly removing the spare wheel and not saying a word about it.(even though you might need it). It's all about making you more reliant on others who are there to fleece you.
I'll be driving my Defender until I'm unable to. Hopefully, I'll be dead soon after.

I've installed an airbag in my defenders headrest and hooked it to a secret switch under my steering wheel. When my geriatric leg snaps in two trying to depress the clutch I'll flip the switch!

    (Joking!)

But seriously bury me in my defender embalmed in ep90

I haven't a smart phone so does that mean I can't get a new car ? Til then my map book and iPod should suffice. I still remember how to use mirrors too !

I own a Defender. It's connected... with the environment.

I drive on beaches with the windows down, and enjoy it and the sea breezes.
I drive through the bush windows down and can hear the birds and such.

"Modern 4wd's I often see with windows up and air con cranked, no doubt listening to Pandora (whoever she is) or some such smartphone thing I hear advertised.

Oh and if I lose smartphone reception - I don't die. That's handy too.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

I guess these connectivity features are important to many new car buyers. Not all are luddites.

BTW, I think using the phone for mapping is a really good idea. Its annoying that proprietry maps go out of date, cost to update and will probably not be supported after 5 or 10 years. Google maps hardly dates and is brilliant in its navigation which considers road congestion and accidents and gives options. Likewise Siri is awesome too, I love the ability to start with "Hey Siri" and then tell the phone what to do, read and dictate back a text reply etc.
    Cheers
