Household water pumps and Australian consumer law

Howdy, bit of an odd one. Last July we had our household water pump replaced after it had an impeller. I believe this was a warranty job.
Our replacement has just died again, it started making unhappy noises so we contacted the plumber who installed it who began to contact the supplier.
Yesterday evening it died totally, and now the supplier is telling us that as it's a warranty replacement we only had a 6 month warranty period, and as it's now outside that period we have to fork out for the replacement. This was information not given to us, nor to the plumber who installed it.
So besides the 6 month warranty on it, does anyone reckon a water pump that only lasts 8 months is fit for purpose? Doing some investigating in regards to consumer law.
    Cheers

I would say no as for it being fit for purpose but I guess it depends on the price paid in the first place. If it's a $100 pump with a 6 month warranty then 8 months is probably ok, but if it was a $1000 pump you could easily argue that you should get more than 8 months out of it.

Almost regardless of price, pumps like that don't often give trouble, even after years or decades of use. Sounds like a dodgey unit.

    Repair, replace, refund | ACCC

    Warranties | ACCC

It may be wrong but it is in my head that the warranty restarts at the time for/of the repair/replace

Tell your plumber to make the Manufacturer aware that they are not complying with Australian Consumer Laws

    What is a consumer guarantee?
The Australian Consumer Law sets out consumer rights that are called consumer guarantees. These include your rights to a repair, replacement or refund as well as compensation for damages and loss and being able to cancel a faulty service. Repair, replace, refund.

No mention of periods etc. Can extend beyond manufacturer's warranty period.

A nice big stick to have at your disposal

Did they ever supply you with anything in writing which said it was a six month warranty?
Recommend you have a chat to Consumer Affairs and then ring the supplier.

8 months is just not on. We have three pumps, 2 are 10 y.o. & 1 is 2 y.o. The 2 y.o. one replaced the 20 y.o. one when it died so 8 months for a decent pump is a joke. I assume it's clean tank water you're pumping & not a grinding paste solution pre filter.

The warranty period starts from the date of purchase. For example, if it has a 2 year warranty & is replaced at 18mths, you are only covered for the remaining 6 months. I've never heard of warranty 're-starting', a lot of manufacturers would be broke if that was the case.

There is an expectation that the replacement part should last a certain length of time though which may well be part of Consumer Law.

If the supplier is saying the replacement pump only had a 6mth warranty, I'd be inclined to think it was a reconditioned pump.

If the replacement pump is identical to the original then why should not that replacement also have the same warranty as the original?

Because you didn't buy the replacement.
