    Now is the time to take speeding seriously

    We had a number of accidents in Victoria on the weekend. Some of them resulted in six deaths.
    This is one of them:

    Now, according to the article, the posted speed limit in that area was 60km/h. Something tells me they weren't travelling 3km/hour over. More like 90km/h over judging by the fact the motor became separated from the car.
    And yet we pound people who can sometimes exceed the speed limit by 5km/h. All in the interests of road safety.

    Maybe it's time to look at speed enforcement. Maybe it's time the boys in blue should not worry about those who go a little over and concentrate their resources on those that travel at over double the legal limit.

    Very true Mick, its actually difficult to keep an eye on the speedo in case you go 3k over and look out for the numbnuts on the road at the same time, i road my bike to work this morning and to constantly check my speed i need to take my eyes off the rd for a sec which is long enough to be in all kinds of doodoo.

    Yes, sometimes it is difficult to see via the speedo, AND watch the road at the same time, that you're not going a bit "over"!
    Wifey's Audi has a bit of modern stuff which makes a bit easier,..she has the option of a LARGE speedo digital readout in large numbers, instantly readable,...she finds it a great help, that is when she's not on cruise, adaptive cruise or any of the other "assists"!!.....but the large numbers are a great help.

    Yep. Be en done a couple times for this over the last few years by "road safety cameras" for doing UNDER 10 kph the posted limit. On the freeway mind you. (Mostly due to tyres throwing speedo off and I forget). 🤔

    If the speed limit is 100km/h then do 95 or 90. If you accidentally speed up a little without realising then you'll still be under the speed limit.

    There is absolutely no compulsion to drive exactly on the speed limit. I don't understand why people think there is.

    (I'm sure this isn't going to be a popular opinion)

    I travel a lot just under the limit (55-60, or 90-100) and I have a constant stream of drivers overtaking me. Including trucks.
    I think that makes me a cause of increased risk on the road.
    There is often a speed camera vehicle on this same bit of road (Bruthen to Orbost) which pings anyone doing 3kmh over 100. Road safety??? don't know about that.

    This is something that needs to be targeted more widely. Not keeping left is more of a safety issue than driving a slightly over the speed limit as it leads to driver frustration which in turn leads to people doing unsafe things in order to get past.

    Unfortunately "Keep Left Unless Overtaking" signs and other such signs have no impact on those who have no situational awareness. We've all seen people driving at 80km/h in the middle lane or right lanes of the motorway, blissfully unaware of the trouble they are causing around them, and wondered how anyone can be so ignorant of where they are.
