Norman Bateman was the ink monitor at Belmore St Public school in Goulburn. The ink was mixed from powder and Norman's hands were stained blue. Desks with cast iron frames and flip up timber tops deeply engraved with signatures of previous pupils from the times when slates were used and dictation was droned.

    Herr Bic was a subversive.

Oh, BTW, Bic (Marcel Bich) was French - so that would be M. Bich

Dont they just mark you competent these days :?
Everything is competency based training these days - and you'll get graded competent even if you aren't.

    Ron[/b][/quote]

    More 'incompetent based training' :x

When I was doing my TAFE traing for my Bakers apprentiship (which was only 6 years ago now), this is the system used. I find that you have 'done' the training and not proven that you actually have the knowledge to back it up and is open to abuse by employers who use apprentices as ****-kickers. Yes they're used for the less important jobs but you actually have to teach them the trade there doing the apprentiship for

A mate of mine is a school teacher and is totally frustrated by the way that the sytem works today. I'm no expert, but it's not working and it's evident in many people who leave school and join the workforce for the first time who can't spell, do basic maths and have no real communication skills at all (too much bloody playstation, x-box,etc.... I hate these things, and I did when I was growing up plus I found them boring as bat****).

Also I'm not a bad speller although my tyops prove otherwise, I make more mistakes on a PC them if I had to write it all by hand. Plus I can't be stuffed checking it all the time so call me lazy.

Anyway, that's my rant, I feel better now.

Do you know what amuses me about this thread?

I posted the same thing on the Overlander forum and there were lots of adverse reactions.

On here we had a bit of a laugh.

I don't correct that many posts on fora but when I do, I try to do it so we can have a bit of fun with it, e.g. like the post about diving Doris down the coast.

    Hi,
    Two things:
    1. P38,
How is it that you can spell well (100%) yet write crappy (60%)? .....Obviously oral spelling bee testing

    2. I was a product of the pass/fail era, but now work with and tutor and retrain and help and assist and do the work of many tradies and technicians that were a product of the comp or not yet comp phenomonen.
My only gripe with that system is that when I am forced to assess a promotion candidate, or job applicant as 'not yet competent', I can't add a qualifier ....like.....

    'and never will be' :?
    or
'sat wrong test, this one was too hard'
    or
'and unlikely to ever become competent'
    or
'cos he/she is dumb as dog poop'

    Regards
    Ralph
