Ahh, the days before railway lines were fenced off in NSW.

Certainly we used pens and dipped them in inkwells. I currently use a fountain pen and have done for 40 years. My writing with a ballpoint is appalling.
BTW, when you broke the centres out of pen nibs, it left two sharp spikes, one each side. Thrown at the blackboard, they'd stick into it.

Norman Bateman was the ink monitor at Belmore St Public school in Goulburn. The ink was mixed from powder and Norman's hands were stained blue. Desks with cast iron frames and flip up timber tops deeply engraved with signatures of previous pupils from the times when slates were used and dictation was droned.
Herr Bic was a subversive.

Oh, BTW, Bic (Marcel Bich) was French - so that would be M. Bich
