    Norman Bateman was the ink monitor at Belmore St Public school in Goulburn. The ink was mixed from powder and Norman's hands were stained blue. Desks with cast iron frames and flip up timber tops deeply engraved with signatures of previous pupils from the times when slates were used and dictation was droned.

    Herr Bic was a subversive.
