A black car is much hotter inside and on the surface than a light coloured car.

I owned a black Jazz and when it was written off , I bought a white one.
Like Chalk and cheese as far as temperature inside is concerned.

My Oslo Blue Disco 2 used to get so hot in the sun that you could only bear to place your hand on it for a short time.

As the roof was going Milky, I painted it silver. You can feel an enormous difference between the two surfaces I reckon about 20c at least. Next summer I may remember to use my new ubeaut temp gauge on it and report back. I also covered the roof windows with chrome vinyl and that also helps the poor old fridge.

To summarise I would never again buy a black car in OZ, Ok in Europe but not OZ.

What amazed me when I returned to OZ after 10 years away from 1980-to 1990 is that from about 2% of sales of black BMWs ( in 1980 when I was placing the orders on Germany) about every second car on the road was black. I couldn't understand the attraction then and I can't understand it now.

    Regards Philip A

I'll never ever have a black car. I got over polishing cars to make them look nice or to attract the girls years ago.... just like they got over getting in them with me! :-((
My elder bro took us for a ride in his wifes new black RR Vogue years ago when we did a trip back to the UK. And he scratched it on some barbed wire. That wouldn't have been visible on a white vehicle but on black it stuck out like the proverbial.
She certainly gave him what for. :-))
I'm like others and rarely wash the things these days, let the rain wash them as it's easier. Twice a year mine get washed and polished, before summer and before winter. But I will admit to regular hosing off the underneath.

Ive got a black car. It looks awesome, but has to be washed every week and then is dirty again as soon as I get it up my driveway. They show every bit of dirt and every mark on them. You also have to be super careful when washing them that the sponge doesn't scratch the wash pattern into the paint, so soak and hose off the car before washing it or put it through the automatic car wash.

My parents old Mica Green (dark) was worse, they could wash it outside of the garage, put it straight into the garage and you could see the dust on it later that day or the next day.
    Cheers

Watch them car washes. Mate put his dog poo coloured new Commodore through one some years ago and it came out looking like it'd been attacked with a wire brush. No water and no suds at all.
The major oil company which operated the wash kicked up about it but eventually paid for a respray.
Good job you don't live in the UK/Europe during the Winter Slunnie, nice shiny black cars there stay looking good for about 2 hrs......

    Had a black truck...

Looked good, even when dirty...Use to wash it at night time, give last hose over at around 10pm with a sud wash of RL12 and leave on, by morning it looked like I polished it...Never washed during daytime...

As for heat, sorry, makes no difference, when its hot its bl^&%y hot, no matter what colour you have and if you need air con, then you need to get out of the office more...

We have two black cars. The first was my wife's Volvo XC60 which we got second hand and for a great price (picked it up from a guy who had won lotto and was upgrading it at 2.5 yrs old so we were not fusssed about the colour as we got it at less than half the original purchase price). Been an awesome car.

Then I really struggled buying my new Defender. I wanted black as I loved the colour but my wife wanted me to go the silver. In the end I went with what I wanted and haven't regretted it at all. Probably the only time I have won with my choice in the car stakes. Deal is she gets her choice for the next one.

I do doubt whether the colour makes a lot of difference. My dad has a white 1993 110 and it seems about as hot as mine when you get into it. The big difference is he has the front vents. But then I have air con. So makes them almost even.

The other big difference is keeping them clean. White is much better. When we lived in the city I cleaned the black cars all the time to keep them looking good. Now we have moved to the family farm I hardly ever bother as they look dirty once we leave the farm drive way. So maybe it just saves me time and effort!
