Apparently, to be recognized as a citizen by descent, you need to apply.

Won't necessarily be granted. If he is disqualified on those grounds, then that means that probably at least half of the adult population of Oz are not eligible for any political office in this country!
He has not (to my knowledge anyway) made that application, therefore, he is NOT a citizen of anywhere other than his country of birth. Should be end of story, but of course, there is so little going wrong in the world nowadays, that the media has to drum up a story from anywhere!
Dual citizenship only precudes candidacy for Federal Parliament. In Queensland citizenship of another country alongside Australian citizenship is acceptable, I'm assuming all states are the same in this regard.

This is the one for NZ citizenship by descent. Apparently you qualify if a parent was an NZ citizen. You register your current details to get a passport.

This is the one to become a British citizen if born outside Britain to a British mother:

Register as a British citizen: Born before 1983 to a British mother - GOV.UK

With all the disruption to parliament due to politicians citizenship, got me thinking about citizenship requirements for jury service in Australian states.
If that was scrutinised it would likely "open a can of worms"

Born and bred in Australia to Australian parents, BUT when I enlisted in the army many years ago I swore an allegiance to the Queen. What does that make me?
