I'm 6ft 2 and I'm OK for height. The extended seat runners also let me sit further back.
The original suspension is also quite soft over bumps.

The defender was sold in the usa for a period of time i think.

Maybe it could have done with a 3.4(6?) or 4.4 litre V8 diesel?

I don't think any diesels (that fit in a Defender) available to Landrover meet US emission standards - and diesels are not at all popular in the US. I don't believe any Series or Defender has ever been sold in the US with a diesel engine. I think the most recent effort (quite a few years back now) used a Disco 1 V8.

It is only the current crop of Range Rover diesels that have sold in the US - earlier RR, Defender and Disco diesels were never sold there.
