And on the emissions reduction, it may also have escaped your notice but there are multiple solar and wind farms of hundreds of MW planned for 2018 alone. There is no reason to expect that this trend will stop any time soon. By the time Australia is 50% EV the grid won't be 90% fossil powered any more.
To add to that MOST people that own , or intend to own an Electric Vehicle have a Solar Array on their house.
We had an existing 2KW system on this house when we purchased it , When I decided I was going to do my EV Conversion I put an extra 3KW on the shed . Giving a 5KW system . The most you can have on single phase (unless you add a power wall)
My EV has a 3.3Kw charger so even on a bad day I still generate WAYY more than I need to recharge the car . And then some because my car is not on the charger all day - every day .
Just face facts you will all be driving Electric Cars sooner than you think !! The arguments against are just clutching at straws.

I like my my fossil fuel guzzleing V8's as much as anyone and own and operate 2 of them, but that's fine as far as classics go, new tech will see the internal combustion engine dead before I am. Electric will become the norm and cheap in years to come. Embrace it or be a crotchetty old fogey who is anti tech - your choice.
All those delivery trucks will be gone in 10 to 15 years, replaced with tech you're already talking about.
We are only at the start of a huge revolution with this tech - in a few years we'll laugh at what's written here. By then you won't be driving either but being driven by the vehicle - which you may not own, but rent as needed.
It seems far fetched but it's closer than you think.
I remember when LPG was sold by one outlet in a 100KM radius of where I lived. Everone laughed and said LPG would never tale off - it's already become common place, peaked and dead and buried in my lifetime.
A steam turbine generator is roughly the same efficiency as an internal combustion engine. Then you have the losses associated with the distribution of the electricity over fast distances of wire and in and out of transformers etc. The end result is that, in this day and age at least, EVs are no more green house friendly than internal combustion engines.
However those areas of high vehicle concentration would have much cleaner air if all of those vehicles were electric.

Yes you could carry a genset to recharge but that defeats the purpose of going electric ln the first place and you would have to carry fuel for the genset anyway.
Solar panels could be the answer But as these are only of use during daylight the time it would take to recharge would severely limit the time spent actually having fun driving in the bush, You could travel at night But that "Sucks" as you can't see the scenery you came out Bush for in the first place.
We are not in any imminent danger of running out of fossil fuels So I can see that electric cars will be limited to the cities and towns where there is the infrastructure in place to support them and Petrol/diesel will still be King in the Bush.
You blokes in the cities can have your "Lectric" cars and good luck to you ( at least the city won't "Pong" as much on my rare visits in future) But I will be sticking to my "Dinosaur juice" 4WD's as long as I possibly can even if they do have to have that bloody DPF fitted to them[thumbsupbig]
Internal Combustion is going the way of the DoDo , its going to become rather quaint like Horse Drawn Vehicles & Steam Vehicles are now !!

Sorry Billy, even old Brown coal plants are far more efficient end to end including all distribution than any intenal combustion engines. Modern gas plants about 3 to 4 times better. I make a living from diesel generators - they are orders of magnitude less effiecient than a coal fired plants or anything else both in fuel consumed and emmisions produced.Quote:
