Mine was a Garrard SP25 auto/single (it could work as either) turntable with a Shure M91ED cartridge fitted into an all transistor stereo receiver/amplifier built by a Sydney company (not a major player like Pye or Kriesler) that advertised in Electronics Australia. Speakers were Electronics Australia design bookshelf units.

Currently, I have a Thorens TD125 turntable, SME arm, and Shure V15 cartridge - none of which have been used in the past 25 years!

Was it an ENCEL Amplifier\Receiver ? I think they advertised in Electronics Aust. I had the separate amp., no receiver and it was very good from memory.

No, that name isn't familiar, Peter. Unfortunately, I no longer have any magazines from that era to look through but I think it may have been an Electronics Australia Playmaster amp made up by Classic Radio in Haberfield.

An unintended consequence of starting this thread is that I can work out approximately how old everyone is.

I notice no one has named their first purchase of music as a download, so no real young'uns.

My first was Bill Haley's 'Rock around the clock' (1954) on a 78rpm record played on an old wind-up gramophone. This was followed by an assortment of Elvis, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, etc. 78s.
When 45s and LPs started to arrive on the market I modified the damper on the clockwork turntable to run at speeds down to 33rpm and fitted an electric pick-up connected to a jumble sale 1928 Pye-Marconi radio. Surprisingly the system would play the whole of a 12" LP side on a single wind-up of the spring.
By 1958 I had modified the pick-up head to take 2 mono cartridges set at right-angles to each other with a stylus set between them to play stereo records. Not having 2 amplifiers I fed the output directly into a pair of ex-government headphones which gave a credible performance.
Ultimately I started to earn a living and slowly substituted the components with items a little more up to date and bought a pair of amplifiers for stereo play-back..
Currently I have a log cabin in the garden set up as a home cinema. Sony 7.2 amplifier into Maudant Short speakers with a BenQ 3D projector onto a 6' wide screen.
